Jesse was a 4th cousin, 6 times removed for me. Here's how it breaks down. Our common ancestors were Francis Settle and Elizabeth Bruce (b. 1622-Francis & 1638-Elizabeth). They had four sons: John, Francis, Thomas, and Henry. John was your ancestor and was the eldest; Francis was my ancestor and next in age to John. Coming out of Virginia, where Francis SR. and Elizabeth had settled, here is my rundown: Francis (b. 1661 inOld Rappahonnock county, VA) married Elizabeth Williams and had son Francis (born 1682. Francis III married Elizabeth Fauntleroy and had son Josiah. He died in 1766. Josiah, born about 1733 in Richmond, Virginia, married Elizabeth Allen in Prince William about 1755 and had 8 children: David (b. 1758-1833), Leah, Benjamin (married Mary Reid), John (1760-1813), Mary "Polly" (1764-abt. 1815; married James Bateman), Elizabeth (aka "Betsey", married a Mullen), Rachel (married a Wardley or Wardlow), and Gemiah (also married a Wardlow). Josiah later married a "Nancy" and had two more children. David Settle became the leader of the famous Settle family of Rockingham county, North Carolina, moving there in the mid 1780's and marrying Rhoda Mullin. Josiah was his second son and third child, born August 24, 1799 in Rockingham county. He married Frances Graves, daughter of Azariah Graves (famed general and statesman from Virginia who had moved to North Carolina) and Elizabeth Williams. Frances and Josiah married June 3, 1826. Elizabeth Graves Settle was born in 1827, her sister Fannie in 1829. Frances Graves Settle (Josiah's wife) was to die in childbirth with this girl. Elizabeth Graves Settle was the one who married Dr. Henry Allen Howard in North Carolina and crossed over to Alabama after their daughter Fannie was born, with the remainder of their children (excepting Josiah) born in Tuskegee. Josiah Howard may have been born on a trip to Mississippi to visit Elizabeth's father Josiah in Tishomingo county, as all his census records state he was born in Mississippi. An interesting footnote to this is the life of Josiah Settle after his wife's death. Black history (and vital records) indicate that he took up with his black slave Nancy (Settle--went by Elizabeth's maiden name) and fathered 9 children with her, moving her from North Carolina to Mississippi, then Ohio when things got hot just before the Civil War. They finally married in 1858 in Hamilton, Butler county, Ohio, and another branch of that family--mulatto lived on. The next message I send will be your line--this one is getting long. I will send it soon. My gggrandmother was Hany Suttles, daughter of Jesse Suttles and Lucinda Martin. Hany married John William Eubanks, son of George and Martha Catherine Goodwin . Hany had a brother, Macajah, who married John William Eubanks' sister, Susan Frances. Who are the parents of your Suttles and Eubanks and where did they go when they left AL?
