Linda,Thank tou very much.I will try your suggestion. Mattie
Mattie, Ellen's last name could have been Barron as there was a large family by that name in Perry County. The website has John Hurd married Mary Edmonds....that is the way it was recorded in the marriage book, but my great great grandparents were John Heard and Mary Edwards who were married very early in the Perry County... March 3, 1824. There were no Edmonds that early in the county so we believe that she was part of the Edwards line that settled very early in Perry County. If she was an Edmonds, she doesn't connect to any of the Edmonds that came later....we have checked and Edmonds just doesn't work. On another branch, my grandfather Silas H. Thompson was recorded as Cyrus A. Thompson in another state's census. I guess the census taker just did not hear it correctly. Yet, another was my great great great grandmother was listed as Jane Canter on a Georgia website but her maiden name was Carter. I knew that but the man who was so nice to transcribe that old marriage book for the county website did not know that....it looked like Canter to him. Hope this helps with your research. Check 1870 census for the name Barron and see if that fits. Ellen may be in the a Barron household. Jim: I checked my SMITH data base and could not locate your Bryant. There are several men named Thomas. I went to the census record and noticed that Bryant was born in North Carolina. My Smith family was in South Carolina before settling in Perry County, AL around 1830. Many of them stayed in Alabama, but my line (Mathew & Bethenia Smith) migrated to Mississippi around 1858, and many of them stayed in that area. My great-grandfather (John Frederick Smith) migrated to Texas circa 1894. Larry
Just read the post re the Campbelite Church and cemetery. I have Solomon Smith b. 1785 in SC and moved to Perry Co. in 1835. Reputedly his maybe half brother was Samuel Smith a Campbelite farmer. Does anyone have a cemetery list for this? I've been brick walled for years and any help would be much appreciated. You can email me direct at _hondo108@aol.com_ (mailto:hondo108@aol.com) . Mary
Larry My Smith Line is from Perry Co. around that time. My Line Starts with Bryant Smith. I can find him on the 1830 census 1850 census and the 1860 census. The 1860 census list 5 children 1. Marry age 19 2. Thomas age 17 3. Matilda age 14 4. Rebecca age 11 5. Adeline age 7 No wife is listed on this census and all previous census only list by name the head of house. There is some debate as to his wife's name. There is a cemetery in Perry Co. that is named The Smith Cemetery (Formerly named Campbellite Church) the church is now extinct. The cemetery is kept in very fine condition and has been used for the Smith family as late as the 1960s maybe even later. I and quite a few more people have a lot of information on this line if you think it is connected to your Smith line. Jim Jones JJones8368@aol.com

Hello! I am new to the list. I am researching my husband's Perry ancestors in Perry County. I am interested in finding out more about the Perrys who moved from Franklin County, NC to Perry County AL prior to 1865, bringing their slaves with them. Those slaves would have included my husband's ancestors. His great grandmother, Endie Perry and her brother, Spence Perry, were born in NC according to 1870, 1880 and 1900 Perry County census records. Spence Perry's daughter, Lula Perry Ervin, died in 1996 in Bibb County at the age of 104. Prior to her death, she had related to us the story of how the Perrys came to North Carolina, however she did not know the first names. If anyone has information on what NC Perry families moved to Perry County and the plantations that they owned, please let me know. I would like to obtain plantation records if available. I am also curious to know if the Oliver Hazard Perry, the War of 1812 hero after whom the county was named, is related to the NC Perrys. I have seen the name of an Oliver Hazard Perry who lived here, but he was much younger.
I would like to hear from any descendants of the Smith family that lived in Perry County in the 1830s. They migrated to Perry County from South Carolina. Their names include: Mark, Sarah, Thomas, Mathew, Levi, Luke, Daniel, George, Rosannah, Mary Ann, Dolly. After county line changes, many of them were found in Hale County. Some descendants went on to Mississippi and eventually to Texas. Some collateral names include Shaffer, Terry, Sims, Tidmore, McFarland, Richardson, Fisher, Jenkins, Larry Wilson
Following was my response to the original message: Do you happen to know what the "M" stands for? My SIMS ancestors lived in Perry County, AL. I have found them difficult to research, so the records of the family came from others who had "bits and pieces" that we put together. My 3g-grandfather was Greene Sims (1770-1831), born in Virginia and died in Greene County, AL. I have a list of eight children - 5 boys, 3 girls. I have some scant information on some of the boys. I have one listed as Miles Sims - but no further information. Most of them migated elsewhere. Some landed in Greene County, AL; others, including my 2g-grandmother, went on to Mississippi between 1858-60. They are recorded in Oktibbeha and Choctaw Counties. She lived with a daughter in Webster County in 1880. This could provide some clues for you to persue. Larry
Hi Jennifer, I have William W. Sims in North Perry and what became Hale County in that same time frame, unfortunately I don't know his parents either, except that the census says they were from Georgia. Do you know any siblings or anything else? My William W. Sims was born Feb. 7 1809 in GA, married Susannah Pool in Perry County Sept 26 1833 and they had the following children: Emily Jane Martha Elizabeth Wilkins Washington Mary Arrenia William Henry Any of this sound related? This is a line that I have not done a lot of work on yet.
