Pat, The Alabama Baptist was a newspaper. It was originated in Marion, Perry County, Alabama in the early 1800's, probably around 1825. I don't know if it is still published or not, but the old building where it was published is an historical site in Marion, and is located on the street that leads in to the main entrance to Judson University. I have copied several of the old newspapers from the 1850's & 1860's and one from 1885 from the library at Samford University in Birmingham. BTW, my great great grandfather was a Baptist minister also. His name was Noah Haggard. Have a Happy!! Lloyd Heard, List Administrator. No; I was told by a lister from Montgomery list that "The Alabama Baptist" was actually a newspaper which is still printed today. His great-great grandfather, another prominent Baptist, had his obituary printed in it. That sounds like a 'third party' type reference to himself, which was used by persons who were often in the spotlight, to avoid saying the 'dreaded' 'me' or 'my' words. Somewhat more formal, but not too 'far out'. Hope that helps. Regards. In an obituary for a daughter of my great-great grandfather, a Baptist minister who lived in Montgomery, Marion, then Texas, I found a part that reads ". . .and for several years traveling with the Alabama Baptist. ..". What does this refer to, the church, a magazine, or some other publication? Pat Hansen Phoenix

I have one of the first edition Perry Co. Heritage books. Only three mentions of Barrons in the index and they are skimpy. Page 40 mentions Barron's Beat and describes the location, also that early settlers were mostly ffrom VA, NC, and GA. names mentioned in the area are Scott, Hanna, Hogue, Barrons, Billingsleas, Browns, Evans, Evins, Fosters, Lees, Moores, Wallaces, Weissingers, Hardie, Howze, DeYampert, Phillips, Stollenwerck, Chambers, Walthall, Webb, and White. No given names, just a list of early families. On page 33 and 34 are mentions of the name of "a wealthy lady, Mrs. Julia Barron" who financed a school for women, which was Judson Female Institute; one of the dorms is named for Mrs. Barron. The school was given to the Alabama Baptist State Convention in 1843. Her husband's name is not given. This is all that I found. Hope this can be of some help in locating the Barrons you are searching for. Erline Steed
Hello Listers, Does anyone know if a picture of any Perry County BARRONS exist. They were mercantile, slave holders, governors and state representatives. IS there a recent Perry County Heritage Book? Could someone with the book give me a contact number for the publisher and or a place to order it. If you could please tell me if there is any mention of the BARRONS I would greatly appreciate it.
