    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/JU.2ADI/554.1.2 Message Board Post: Eunice, I found your family in the 1850 Clark Co., MS, census, family 152, (Sam W. Howze, wife Martha, and two children, at the following web page: http://www.clarkecomsgenealogy.com/1850cen2.html Living next to them was family #151 James M. Hand, wife Caroline, and their children. Family # 148 was Sarah Hand, apparently a widow, and her children. And family #139 was my wife's ancestors, John H. Ogburn and wife Rebecca (Howze), and their children. I recently learned that Rebecca Caroline Howze was b. in Perry Co., MS, not AL as I had mistakenly thought. More than ever, I now suspect that the Hand family is in Rebecca's ancestry. You can look for the family of Sam and Martha Howze in the 1860 and 1870 Clark Co. census by clicking on the surname index at the top of the above referenced web page. Good luck!

    3. I found interesting Judson College material several years ago while researching my Leverett ancestor who family tradition states was instrumental in the founding of Judson. This tradition has not been proved, I would, however, like to share the gathered research information. Judson College was established in 1838 in Marion, Perry Co., AL[1]. The Marion Female Seminary (first name of Judson), Howard College and Judson College have all had fires with record losses.[2] Some of the available Judson College catalogs, books and other surviving documents written about Judson located in the college archives were searched.[3] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [1]Manley, Louise, History of Judson College 1838-1913, (Foote & Davies Company, Atlanta, GA: date N/A): 7. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/JU.2ADI/567 Message Board Post: Currently, in Perry County, just north of Vilula, just south of Spencer's Chapel Church, on Highway 45, on property owned now by the Crawford family since the Depression, there is an old house on the east side of the road (hidden by undergrowth), and a cemetery on the west side of the road (hidden by undergrowth). In the cemetery, some of the names are Howell, Weaver, Stevens, Boggs, Turnbow, & Adair. This land was originally patented to Lewis Howell, b. 1778 in Wayne County, NC, died 1840 in Perry County. He was my GGGGgrandfather. Does anybody know anything about this cemetery? There is no record of the burials there, as far as anyone can tell. George Crawford and Roy Crawford have been helpful about their property, but they just don't know who is in the graves there. Any information about this cemetery would be appreciated. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/JU.2ADI/369.2 Message Board Post: JULIA ZITELLA COCKE was born November 10, 1840, and died on December 3, 1929. She was selected to present the company flag to the Marion Rifles on the eve of the War for Southern Independence. The flag was made of silk and was the handiwork of Marion artist NICOLA MARSCHALL designed with a coiled rattlesnake under the words “Don’t Tread on Me” in Latin. Zitella’s speech at the presentation held to the theme that the men were going forward in a “just cause.” SUMTER LEA accepted the flag for the company. This ceremony was at-tended by 400 students from Judson and Howard colleges, all dressed in white. Zitella was educated by private tutors and by her mother who was a talented Latin scholar, musician and linguist. She attended Judson College in Marion and graduated with honors. She traveled in Europe and studied music there before settling in Baltimore, Maryland. In Baltimore she taught German and music and engaged in l! iterary work, but moved again to Boston, Massachusetts, where she taught voice and piano while continuing to write. Zitella authored “Doric Reed,” a volume of poems, “Grasshopper Hop,” verses for children, “Cherokee Roses and Other Poems.” Like many writ-ers, she authored a variety of literature including short stories, verses for children and newspaper articles. Her writings were translated into foreign languages and met with favorable critical reviews. Cocke was a creative writer and some called her the greatest poet Alabama ever produced. She was the Poet Laureate of Alabama. [28th Alabama Infantry Muster Roll; Marion Cemetery; Heritage, v II, “Perry County Personalities” pp. 9-11; Owen, Alabama Biography, v III, p. 740]
