Surnames: Edwards Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/JU.2ADI/581.1.1 Message Board Post: Jeff, I don't know if James Edwards was ever in Marengo County. I only know that other Edwards family members lived in Oglethorpe Co., Georgia and Perry Co., Alabama. I do know that James was living in Louisiana by 1848 when he got married. He would have been about 22 years old in 1846. The name James Edwards is so common that I am having a hard time with research. I will look around in Marengo County. Thanks for the clue. Anything is possible.

    3. Hello Cathy, I have researched the land records extensively at the Perry County courthouse. Have found all the records I needed indexed with one rare exception as noted below. I have used the direct and indirect indexes provided for us in the "center" room of the Probate Clerk's office. Have you seen the indexes of deeds in the "back" room? If not, check the very old indexes on shelves on the wall to your "far" right. These books are thin and in very bad shape. If you do not find the record you need, check in later direct and indirect indexes. I found a 1872 deed recorded 30 years later in 1903! Let me know if I can help you further. I plan to go to Perry County soon myself. Charlotte

    3. Before we make an unnecessary trip, does anyone know if all the land records there have been indexed? From the records that appear online, there seems to be some missing years. If there is an index for the missing years, where would we find it? My research partner sent this: ...you have Vol. A index and Vol A book of records. Then you have the Vol B book of records, but a missing Vol B index. The person doing the transcribing wrote down the indexes, but skipped those Volumes where there was no index. So there are years of records that are not on this list! We need to go back to Perry and go through those missing volumes that are not transcribed. It will be tedious work to go through each land sale...
