Anyone researching the Willis and Rutledge families of Marshall and Morgan County? My gggrandfather Riley Willis (his name may have been Riley Newton) b.unknown d.was shot and killed while turkey hunting before 1859. Anyone ever read about a Willis man getting shot please let me know. In 1847 he entered for land patent and got 40 acres which is located on the Marshall/Morgan County line. He married Melinda Jane Rutledge Walker on March 15,1843 in Marshall County. She was the daughter of David and Mary Bullard Rutledge of Morgan County, AL. She first married Robert H Walker in 1840. I don't know what happen to him, if anyone knows please let me know. Melinda Jane Willis and their five children moved to Walker County, AL in 1859. She entered a land patent for 80 acres of land on the Walker/Fayette County line in 1859. She donated land for Willis Chapel Freewell Primitive Baptist Church where she is buried. Riley Newton Willis and Melinda Jane Rutledge children was: Angeline b. 1843 (never married) Charlotte (Charlotta) b. 1845 married Neeley Tidwell lived in Walker County, AL William J b. 1847 (died Young) Riley Newton b. 1849 married Martha Lawrence Lived in Walker County, AL Mathew (Matha) David b. 1851 (my ggrandfather) married Ollie Margaret Tidwell and lived in Winston County, AL Any help sure would be appreciated.
