I'm a new subscriber to the list and hope that someone can help me locate information regarding my great grandfather's parents and siblings. I would love to finally find a Wilson home for my Abraham/Abram Wilson. Abram is first found on the 1870 Morgan County census. He is shown as 18 yrs old, a farmer, born in GA and living in the home of a Mary Woodall. She is shown as age 33, keeping house and born in SC. I do not know if she was a Woodall by birth or if she was a Woodall by marriage. I have never been able to find any information on her or her family. I have a copy of Abram's marriage license to Sarah Jane Nesmith, d/o Robert Martin Nesmith and Sarah M. Woodall Nesmith, of Morgan Co. They married in Lawrence County Oct 6, 1870. I also have a copy of a document addressed to the probate judge of Lawrence County, giving permission for Abram to marry. Evidently 18 was too young to marry in AL at that time. I had hope to find the parents of Abram on this letter but the signatures appear to be H. H. Crosby and S. E. Crosby. This letter is very faint and barely readable so the name may be something similar to Crosby. I don't know if one of these people could have been his mother who had remarried, a sister or brother, or even legal guardians. However, I find on that same census, a Sarah Crosby living next door to Abe and Mary Woodall. It shows her to be 21 years of age, BLIND, and apparently living alone with an infant, Jas. W., age 9/12 and born in AL. No other adult is shown in the home. I don't know if she was a widow of a confederate Crosby soldier, if the husband had died in other circumstances or if he had left the home. I guess she possibly could have been unmarried. I've wondered if the initial W. in her child's name might stand for Woodall and if she herself might have been a Woodall. The possibilities are endless. The family story is that in March of 1874, Abram was out working and was called home to be with Sarah Jane as she was in labor with their first child. He never made it home and his body was never found. No one in my family has ever known what really happened and we never knew who Abram's parents or siblings were. As far as I know, my grandfather never mentioned his father's family; he may not have known about them. We think either Abe's parents or his ancestors were originally from either NC or SC, then moved to GA and then, Abe at least, moved on to AL. We have searched high and low for any information on his parents or siblings and found nothing. If anyone can make a connection to this family, please contact me. Abram really needs a home.
