Hey, Some time ago corresponded with a descendant of a William Tapscott who was a part-owner of the sailing ship "William Tapscott". She seemed a bit defensive as her feeling was that he and his brother had used very sharp business practices, and may have cheated people. Anyway, was just knocking around on the net - using "Google" as a search engine, and plugged in the word "Tapscott". Got umteen million hits and started looking at them by picking every 10th page of hits to read. [Good way to spend time on the net when you can't sleep - just plug in a word and see what you get] Saw a reference to the ship William Tapscott and began to read it in detail. Site is: http://www.xmission.com/~nelsonb/journey.htm and it's a story about some of the Mormans from Scandanavia and Europe coming to America on the William Tapscott, and then their trip on to Salt Lake City. Pretty good reading, and not too long (the footnotes are very interesting). From some of the favorable comments there does not appear to be any reason why she should feel ashamed of the way they were treated on board that ship. It's also about the same time frame as that little journal of the soldier, named Rielly, I sent Jim; and R. went to SLC from Los Angeles as escort to the Army Paymaster to pay the soldiers who were there re the Mormans. Either as guards to keep the Mormans safe or as guards to protect others from them - I'm not clear on which. Somewhat ambivalent re the Mormans - can't seem to decide exactly how I feel about them. Much is admirable, and some seems sort of underhanded. Don't know enough to really have a well-informed opinion - sort of like the way I vote in elections, just muddle along. For whatever all this is worth. Take care. Robert
