    1. [ALMORGAN] May be worth your time
    2. Robert L. Tapscott
    3. Hey, Some time ago corresponded with a descendant of a William Tapscott who was a part-owner of the sailing ship "William Tapscott". She seemed a bit defensive as her feeling was that he and his brother had used very sharp business practices, and may have cheated people. Anyway, was just knocking around on the net - using "Google" as a search engine, and plugged in the word "Tapscott". Got umteen million hits and started looking at them by picking every 10th page of hits to read. [Good way to spend time on the net when you can't sleep - just plug in a word and see what you get] Saw a reference to the ship William Tapscott and began to read it in detail. Site is: http://www.xmission.com/~nelsonb/journey.htm and it's a story about some of the Mormans from Scandanavia and Europe coming to America on the William Tapscott, and then their trip on to Salt Lake City. Pretty good reading, and not too long (the footnotes are very interesting). From some of the favorable comments there does not appear to be any reason why she should feel ashamed of the way they were treated on board that ship. It's also about the same time frame as that little journal of the soldier, named Rielly, I sent Jim; and R. went to SLC from Los Angeles as escort to the Army Paymaster to pay the soldiers who were there re the Mormans. Either as guards to keep the Mormans safe or as guards to protect others from them - I'm not clear on which. Somewhat ambivalent re the Mormans - can't seem to decide exactly how I feel about them. Much is admirable, and some seems sort of underhanded. Don't know enough to really have a well-informed opinion - sort of like the way I vote in elections, just muddle along. For whatever all this is worth. Take care. Robert

    2. JQ
    3. S.L.Cook, born about 1842 probably in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio son of Alfred B. Cook , moved back to Albany, Alabama, before 1923. He may have retired in Morgan County, and possibly is buried there. He served in the Civil War with the 39th Georgia Infantry as a fife player. One of his daughters (Katherine) married my grandfather (Nolan Matthews). Another married A.C. Mann. Mrs A.C.Mann was still alive in 1960 when Katherine (Cook) Matthews died in Wichita Falls, Texas. Katherine is buried next to Nolan and a Mrs. A.B. Price (Alice Price). I am hopeing to find Samuel L. Cook, A.C. Mann, and Mrs. A.C. Mann in Morgan County and where they are buried.

    1. Re: [ALMORGAN] More on DeVAULTs in the early days (1820's) & maybe Wm. BYRD
    2. There's one I forgot. There is an Elizabeth DeVAULT. Actually there are 2: One married William YOUNG and the other m. John GAULT. Or maybe it's the same one, but you would think she'd get married under her first husband's name, i.e. Mrs. Elizabeth YOUNG m. John GAULT. Anyways, I can't figure her out either. Thanks, Cheri

    1. [ALMORGAN] More on DeVAULTs in the early days (1820's) & maybe Wm. BYRD
    2. Dear List, This is what I have found out since my first posting a few days ago. I obtained this info from Larry Johnson's webpage (http://home.flash.net/~johnsonl/devault.htm). He went to Morgan Co. and did some research there. I hope to get to my FHC on Friday and find out what they have on hand for Morgan Co. Please let me know if the following is familar to anyone. David DEVAULT m. #1 Susanna GUEST on 19 Mar 1800 in Grainger Co, TN (I know my FHC has the 1810 Grainger Co Census--yes, it exists, even though the rest of E. TN was lost). They have a bunch of kids. Then it appears that Susanna dies, because David remarries on 5 Sep 1816 in Wilson Co TN to Ann McCRORY. They have a few kids (my guess is only 2-3). Ann must have died too. Then David dies and Morgan County Orphan Court records begin on 2 Dec 1822 regarding 10 minors. Most of the kids go to Rev. William BYRD of Limestone Co, AL. Apparently some go to a William DEVAULT in Lawrence Co. Here are the kids IN MARRIAGE ORDER and who they married. (I did this only because I figure the older kids got married first). Elijah DEVAULT m. 14 Dec 1822 Morgan Co, AL to Polly ABELS John DEVAULT m. 25 Sep 1823 Morgan Co, AL to Frances PRIDDY Issac DEVAULT m. 2 Oct 1832 Morgan Co, AL to Rebecca HARLAN Matilda DEVAULT m. 19 Jul 1835 Morgan Co, AL to John M. CUMMINGS Rebecca DEVAULT m. 30 Mar 1837 Morgan Co, AL to William H. LITTLE Sarah DEVAULT (mine) m. 26 Mar 1840 Morgan Co, AL to Absalom RHODES Susan(nah) DEVAULT m. 28 Apr 1841 Morgan Co, AL to Moses LOONEY Kids I can't find a marriage for yet: Lydda/Lydia DEVAULT Lucinda DeVAULT Other misc./perplexing info I can't figure out: Irena DEVAULT m. 11 Dec 1832 Morgan Co, AL to Issac CARPENTER Polly / Mary DEVAULT m. license 7 Jan 1822 to Edward SUMMERFORD William DEVAULT m. Nancy AMONET 22 Dec 1818 Lawrence Co, AL. Nancy b. c. 1792 and dies 15 Apr 1845, age 53. William & Nancy take in some of the kids. I'm guessing that William may have been David's brother. Mary is not listed in the original kids (but maybe she wasn't a minor), but then there are orphan court notes from Edward C. Summerford re: his wife Mary. Is Polly a nickname for Mary? I have no clue who Irena is. It says most of the kids went to Rev. William Byrd. Later some went to Wm & Nancy DeVault, and I think some went to Elijah DeVAULT. If you check out the 1830 Morgan Co Census, Elijah has extra people living with him (males: 2 under 5, 3 are 20-30! ; females: 1 under 5, 1 was 5-10, 1 was 15-20 and 1 was 20-30). I'm guessing Issac & Susan(nah) are living with him; I can't figure out the extra male). Susan(nah) lived with Wm. Byrd in 1823, 24, and part of 25 (court records). In 1832, Nancy DEVAULT (wife of Wm) is the guardian of Lucinda, Rebecca, Sarah & Elizabeth. Her 1830 vs. 1840 sort of supports this. I think Sarah (mine) was the youngest or 2nd youngest. Her tombstone reads that she was b. 13 Dec 1822, but I think she was probably b. in 1821. Any ideas? Thanks, Cheri Mello

    1. Re: [ALMORGAN] RHODES & DEVAULT (1820's-1855/6)
    2. Have you tried Rootsweb.com's WorldConnect search? I pulled up two Sarah DeVAULTs, one born 1821, the other, 1818. A third mentions the David DeVAULT to whom you refer. The spouse (BOGGS) does not match with your Absalom, but perhaps she remarried???? That was a fascinating family history you gave. Thank you for sharing it. The only one I know of is an ancestor who was eaten by an alligator. 1. [ALMORGAN] RHODES & DEVAULT (1820's-1855/6)
    2. Dear List, Looking for information on the following: Absalom RHODES b. 7 Jul 1815 (tombstone) in AL (various censuses) m. 23 Mar 1840 in Morgan Co, AL to Sarah DeVAULT b. 13 Dec 1822 (tombstone....some censuses are leading me to think b. 1821) in AL (various censuses). I cannot find Absalom & Sarah on the 1840 Census. I can find them in 1850, in Morgan Co, with 8 children. My mother told me tonight that Absalom owned a plantation in Huntsville, AL (I'm thinking she's got the location off), including slaves. In the past (as well as tonight), she told me that when they moved to MO (c. 1855-56), they set all their slaves free. One woman and her little boy asked if they could come to MO with them, as they would be free (my mom doesn't notice the contradiction in her story) so they could look for the husband (or father of the boy, as I don't think slaves were allowed to marry). The woman and her son do NOT appear in the 1860 Stone Co. MO census with Absalom & Sarah RHODES. Sometimes, when my mother tells the story, she says bushwhackers killed Absalom because he let the woman and her boy go free (he was killed in 1862 and bushwhackers roam the countryside....doubt if they would have known who had what...I think they were after horses). What I need to find the most (besides verifying the story up there) are the parents of Sarah DeVAULT. I found a webpage that mentions a David DeVAULT d. in Dec 1822, leaving all of his children orphaned. Of course there is a Sarah listed. But I don't know if she is mine. Anyone know of these families? Thank you, Cheri Mello Torrance, CA Absalom & Sarah (DeVAULT) RHODES - Thomas/TC/Babe - Maud Lena

    1. [ALMORGAN] Mary (Burleson) Staten
    2. Hello folks, I'm looking for information on a Mary Staten who married a Doctor. According to family members, my husband's great grandmother Nina Brooks was raised by Dr. and Mary Staten, because her family died of yellow fever. I found a Mary A. Staten who was a Burleson. She did live in DeSoto Co., Miss at one time. This is where my husband's great grandfather James Spencer was born. I think that there could be a connection with this Mary A. Staten to Nina (Brooks) Spencer. There are similar things such as: James and Nina named one of their children Joseph Burleson. James was born in DeSoto Co., Mississippi. The Mary A. (Burleson) Staten did marry a doctor. I'm told by family members that Mary's son was in El Paso Texas at one time and according to the LDS Mary A. Staten died in El Paso Texas. I'd appreciate any help, Rhonda

By the mid 1830's several branches of these families, including the McGlatherys, Sims and Fullers had moved to Blount County. What was the history of Blount County in relation to Morgan County. Were lands in Blount County opened latter than Morgan County for settlement? Jim Sims
