Good afternoon Morgan County list members. I need a little help and/or information regarding indenture agreements and about adoptions. After reading the following, maybe you will have some suggestions. My great grandparents, Abram Wilson/Willson and Sarah Jane Nesmith, were married in neighboring Lawrence County on Oct 6, 1870. Why Lawrence County I do not know, as both he and his bride lived in Morgan Co. When I received copies of his marriage license, I also received a copy of a note giving Abram permission to marry. Evidently, at age 18, he was underage. His bride was of legal age to marry. Does anyone know what the legal age for marriage was in Morgan and Lawrence Counties back in 1870? I was hoping that these records would show the names of his parents but they did not. Instead, there was this note addressed to the probate judge in which it said, and spelling is shown as it was written: "Judge of probat of Lar????. county Ala. Sir This is to Sertify that you have the consint of H. H. Crosby & S. E. Crosby the Home of the Sed Abram Willson. I Sertify the above is True this October the 5, 1870 to grant lysens." This copy was the first time that I had seen my Wilson surname spelled with 2 L's. Neither I nor anyone in my Wilson line knows who these Crosby people were or why they had the authority to sign such a document. It has been suggested that perhaps Abram had either been adopted or had entered into an indentured position with these Crosbys to learn a trade. I think he would have been too young to buy land if he had to have permission to marry, so I don't think the indenture would be associated with the sale of land. I would like to find out where to search for adoption or indenture records in either Morgan County or Lawrence County. I'm guessing the time frame would be 1850's to 1860's for adoption and 1860's for the indenture record. I would also appreciate any suggestions or ideas about the above situation. What do you think it all means? Thanks for any and all help/suggestions. Paula

Can someone answer the following questions? 1. If someone supposedly died, his body never found and his family never heard from him again, what would happen to that body if and when it was found? Where would it be buried? Wouldn't it be reported to the legal authorities? My great grandfather supposedly was on his way home from work in 1874 (he had been summoned that his wife was in labor) and that was the last the family ever knew about him. This happened either in Morgan or Lawrence Co, AL. News traveled fast back then since everyone probably knew everyone and the areas surrounding the family home where they worked, shoped and visited was probably not very large. Is it logical that the discovery of an unidentified body would not be news all over the county? Is it logical that a body would not be found if the family was waiting for him to come home; wouldn't they most likely put out a search party when he didn't arrive? If found at some point, would that body be buried in a potter's field or county cemetery as unidentified? 2. On the KY web site there is something called "KY FOOTSTEPS" which appears to be tid bits taken from old newspapers of the times. It is very informative regarding the people of KY...who visited who, who was arrested, who got married, etc. Does Morgan or Lawrence County have such a site on line or somewhere that this type of data can be viewed? 3. Finally, if a person was indentured to learn a trade, where could I find such records? As you can tell, I've never been able to find my g grandfather because he was presumed killed on his way home from work and his body never found. I've tried just about everything I can think of to learn more about him, but no success. I do not know who his parents were or where he was born except it was supposedly somewhere in GA. The only link I've found of him is his marriage in Lawrence Co and I've exhausted every avenue that I can regarding that document. I hate to think that perhaps he just walked away from his family as he had only been married 4 years and his only child was born on the day he was said to have died. But I have to wonder. Any suggestions, ideas, etc? This is driving me crazy! Thanks, Paula

Hi ALL, I have not posted in a while and I very much need your help. But first please let me apologize to any of you who may be on more than one of the lists I'm sending this to as you unfortunately will receive more than one copy of this message. I am looking for the parents of Elijah WADE. Here is what I know about Elijah: Elijah WADE b. abt. 1804 SC. Elijah WADE m. Rebecca HAMES on 12-30-1823 in Hall Co GA. Rebecca was the dau. of John HAMES and Charity JASPER. Elijah and Rebecca lived in both GA (prob. Hall Co) and SC (prob. in Union, Cherokee or Spartanburg Co) as they had children b. in both states. In 1830 Rebecca and the four oldest children can be found in Jackson Co AL. Elijah was living with William KING in Spartanburg Co SC at the taking of the 1830 census. This William KING was very active in the Big Creek Church in the 1790s. In 1840 the entire Elijah WADE family was living in Morgan Co AL. At the end of 1840 this part of Morgan Co AL became part of Marshall Co AL. In 1850 and 1860 they appear on the Marshall Co AL census. I can find no record of Elijah and Rebecca after the 1860 Marshall Co AL census. Known children were: 1. Elizabeth WADE b. abt. 1825 GA m. Nicholas BLAKE in 1842 Marshall Co AL. 2.
