    1. [ALMORGAN] COURT RECORDS OF LAWRENCE CO, AL IN 1874
    2. Paula, This probably will not help but I have run into this situtation. I was told a great-uncle was never married. I got this from all the members of my Dad's family and they all knew him personally. Moreover, I found him with his father and a widowed Aunt in 1900c and he is marked 'unmarried". Well, I heard from another researcher who had a gr-aunt and a marriage to a man by this name, (its unusual and I know this whole family very well and it has to be him). The marriage took place in a county just above where she lived and probably he was living there at the time too Her mother wrote the permission for her to marry him. There was a son who took the his name but no one thinks they ever lived together. The girl died soon after and her mother raised the child. I have never been able to find this son except the one census (1900 too, in the 'home' Co, not where the father was). He may have d in WWI, that family thinks. Now, was this a case of making the baby ligitimate? If so, why not marry at home where everyone could see they WERE married; she did have the baby there, after all! Was it NOT his child but he gave it his name? Why would his family not know abt this, what ever it was? Did they m away from home so no one could look up the date of the marriage? Its a puzzel And there are no aunts or uncles or my Dad alive to ask abt it! Carleen

    2. Tom Dunklin
    3. I need a little input here regarding the following information about my great grandfather, Abram Willson/Wilson. I do not know who his parents were or if he had siblings so I am unable to go back any further than Abram. Abram Wilson was first found on the 1870 Morgan Co, AL census living in the home of a Mary Woodall. Abe is shown as age 18, white male, farmer, born in GA. Mary Woodall is shown as age 33, white female, keeping house, born SC. I have not been able to identify this Mary Woodall or gather any other information on her. Note also that a Sarah Crosby, age 21, blind, white female, born in GA is also shown living next door to Abram and Mary Woodall. There is also a 9 month old infant son living with Sarah Crosby but no adult male is shown in the household. More about a Crosby couple is found below. In Oct of 1870, Abram Willson/Wilson married Sarah Jane Nesmith of Morgan Co. AL. Though Abram was living in Morgan County at the time, the marriage was performed in neighboring Lawrence Co, AL. I have a copy of the license. Also included with this license is a copy of a letter/note that is addressed to the Probate Judge of Lawrence Co, AL. This document gives permission for "Abram Willson" to marry. The print is extremely faint and very hard to read. It is signed by what appears to be an H. H. Crosby and S. E. Crosby. Up until this document, any Crosby family had been unknown to my Wilson line. I'm wondering why send a letter to the Probate Judge? Would this indicate that Abram's parents were most likely dead and that the Crosbys had legal authority to sign? My first thought was that Abram's father had died and that his mother had married this H. H. Crosby. But if his mother was the S. E. Crosby in the letter, would the Probate Judge have been involved? Couldn't she have just given her permission? Since it was sent to the Probate Judge in Lawrence County, would this indicate that Abram's family probably lived or had lived in Lawrence County at one time? Would it indicate that an adoption, indenturship or any other legal matters concerning Abram had been carried out in Lawrence County? On the chance that Abram had been adopted by this Crosby, would Lawrence County be the most likely place to look and where would I go to look for such info? Since I live in TX and am unable to go to AL to do the research. What would be the best way for me to find out the information that I need? I would appreciate any help, suggestions, etc. Paula Wilson Dunklin

    1. [ALMORGAN] About Virus Warnings
    2. RootsWeb does not allow attachments to come thru the lists...HOWEVER if someone on this list is infected and you are in their address book many virus's will send out the attachment to everyone in their address book. I can tell you I am getting many "rejected" emails from RootsWeb that show it would have had the Snow White and the Seven Dwarf's attachment. BUT again RootsWeb does NOT allow attachments to go thru their mailing lists..they are REJECTED. Every year at this time there are many virus's that are sent out. So be cautious and even if you know the person before you open a ".exe" attachement contact them and see if it is safe. Good luck in your search and be cautious Kathy

    1. [ALMORGAN] Weston - Hodge surnames
    2. Ellis
    3. Still looking for my ggg grandfather. Was married to Elizabeth Julia (possibly Hodge) Weston. Had three known children with Elizabeth Julia. Moses Riley Weston per Army records was born in 1826 in Morgan county, AL and signed up with the Army at Summitt AL in 1847 to fight in the War with Mexico and died three months later. Nephanny (Neffie, Neffa, Nettie, etc) Weston who was born in AL in 1828 and married John Butler in Blount county , AL and Jasper Newton Weston born in AL and married to Elizabeth Lucinda Fortner, daughter of Squire Fortner. He was born in 1833. This mystery Weston grandfather could have been married before per family stories and had other children. He was I believe dead by 1840 as Elizabeth Julia Weston appears in court records alone building a dam on the Big Spring in Big Spring Valley near Guntersville, AL and per census records she was alone. So , my ggg grandfather must have died (or left) sometime between 1833 and 1840. I just don't know. Elizabeth Julia appears to have had a daughter pre this marriage (marriage record never found) named Lydia (Hog, per Tidwell bible record) she married Calvin Tidwell.

    1. [ALMORGAN] Listowner:A reminder before the holidays
    2. I just want to remind everyone in the next few weeks we will have a lot of new people get computers for the holidays. And with that we will get a lot of people new to computers, internet and genealogy. Please be kind and thoughtful of these new people...we were all new once ourselves. We do not want to intimidate them to where they are afraid of posting any information...after all they may have the answers we are looking for in our own research. As listowner, I do try to watch over and help guide them politely how to post queries on the mailing lists. But as most of you know my time is very limited with taking care of my step mom so it may take a few emails from a new person for me to catch it. With respect to the new ones please do not flame them on the list but contact me and I will help them. I wish you all successes in your research in the new year to come. And if you must travel during the holidays...I hope it is a safe trip for you. Thank you & good luck in your search! 1. [ALMORGAN] Morgan Co., AL website updated
    2. Morgan Co., AL website has been updated. I want to say thank you for being so patient with me. My & my husband's health has been ok the past couple of months. However the day I had my mild heart attack I was going over to my step mothers whose cancer reoccurred and was given 6 mo with chemo. My time since has been at the hospital when she was admitted and the rest with my turn of caring for her at her home. Since I am snowed/iced in at home and one of my step sister the same at my step mom's home...and I actually got more than 3 hours of uninterrupted sleep...I am trying to get as much updating to all my websites I can today....since my time is so limited..and we are getting close to the end of the year..I did archive the queries for this year. So the ones that have been submitted to me are actually placed on 2001 queries. Be safe in your travels for the holidays & Good luck in your search! 1. [ALMORGAN] 'hatter' Overstreet & Judith Walker prepublication offer
    2. Bob Overstreet
    3. Hi List: About a year ago, I attempted to share family data with others interested in the Overstreet surname, by printing and distributing "Overstreets in Virginia - 300 Years of Bedford County". The response was more active than anticipated. About six thousand family members in the data base then has grown - - grown now to over ten thousand. And many of the genealogical facts have been expanded and/or corrected, I prefer to call it enriched. This has only occurred because so many of you have shared with me your efforts and knowledge. Now I am willing to share with interested folks a sequel. One of the Bedford family lines has increased the reported names over three fold, along with significantly enriching detail. This family, the descendants of Thomas 'the hatter' Overstreet & Judith Walker is the subject of the current new offering. This is an expansion to a portion of the Bedford workbook and I am delighted to share it before the end of this year. This workbook of over one hundred pages presents the family in the Register format and the Outline format. The plastic comb binding and every name index will be features you will find helpful for many years. Please be forewarned! This data base is only able to grow and help others in response to the information that everyone shares. You will be expected to let me, or our friends at Rootsweb, know what corrections are needed and the additions you know about and would like added into the data base. Email orders are accepted and only email orders will be acknowledged. A $5 prepublication discount will be allowed for all orders received before copy goes 'to the printer', about December 10th. Please mark prepublication discount on Miscellaneous line. Orders will be shipped Priority Mail after your check has been received, thank you. I expect the orders to be ready for shipment on 15th of December. 1. [ALMORGAN] Re: White family in Morgan Co.
    2. My G-grandfather Jonathan 'White Sims was born 1835 in Morgan Co., Alabama to David Sims who in turn was born 1816 in Tenn. David was one of six sons of Joel Sims of SC>Tenn>Alabama. Joel's wife, Eliz. McGlathery Sims, was of the David McGlathery family in Laurens SC. Joel and Eliz. had married in SC before migrating to Tenn. Jonathan White Sims's mother was Nancy Hodges Fuller, b 1817, whose family was of Greenville SC. with a migration route through the Carolinas with a stop in Ga. Nancy Fuller's was of the Wm. Hodges family. Wm. Hodges was in the north Alabama area as early as 1810. Nancy Hodges Fuller married Jonathan Fuller 1804 in Ga. and moved near her brother John Hodges in SC before moving near Somerville, Alabama circa 1831. THE Question ... it seems that everyone in the Sims and Fuller lineages were named for relatives ... often with the middle name reflecting the surname of the namesake ... as we have no known ties to a White family, does anyone know of any White family ties to the Sims or Fuller families of Morgan or Blount Co., Alabama in the 1820's or 1830's? 1. [ALMORGAN] 'hatter' Overstreet line workbook available - prepublication noti ce
    2. Bob Overstreet
    3. The response to my effort to print and distribute "Overstreets in Virginia - 300 Years of Bedford County" in 1999 has been met with some success and recently several questions about when "is the update workbook going to be available?" The Thomas 'the hatter' Overstreet & Judith Walker family has had more information exchanged than any of the other Bedford family lines. The Bedford data base has grown from 6,000 to over 10,000 names. This growth has only happened because of so many wonderful and helpful folks like you. With this expression of interest, I am making available a workbook with Thomas 'the hatter' Overstreet and Judith Walker as the eldest ancestor. Distribution will began by the early part of December 2000, so orders will be shipped in time for holiday sharing with others. Please contact me if you might have any interest in considering acquiring this useful resource of Overstreet family history. A prepublication discount will be allowed for all orders placed before copy goes 'to the printer', about December 4th. Email orders are accepted and all email orders will be acknowledged. Orders will be shipped Priority Mail after your check has been received, thank you. I expect the orders to be ready for shipment on the 12th of December. Please be fore warned!
