Greetings on this the 191st anniversary of the birth of one of this Nation's most This Honorable Statesman was born in Kentucky, in 1808 and graduated from the Transylvania University, in Lexington, Kentucky, and from the U.S. Military Academy 1828. Retiring from active military service in 1835, to undertake the agrarian life, he was elected to the United States Congress in 1845. Resigning from Congress in 1846, this statesman/soldier returned to the active military and was a recognized military hero in the Mexican War. He subsequently returned to politics and was a U. S. Senator from 1847 to 1851. From 1853 to 1857, he was Secretary of War in the administration of President Pierce and directed one of the most intense upgrades of the military in U.S. history.
