Dear All, I seem to recall [i.e. I remember reading it but cannot cite the source] that some census takers used "mulatto" for indicating of Native American heritage in addition to its more technical definition. However, it is most curious to me that the racial designation is not consistent throughout the family. I will [eventually] look through my notes and see if I found information on this family (I believe there was a marriage record) listed in the "White" or "Colored" volumes as well. I, too, have been in contact with the Middleton of color that Grant mentioned.
