Hello everyone, For what its worth let me put my two cents into this thread. Monroe County, Alabama has a wonderful history. The people of "old Monroe" are some of the nicest folks you will ever met. My family dates back in Monroe County to 1827 or before. I still have alot of family living in Monroe Cty also. Some of the problems in Monroe, are plain simple ones. Money for one The Library is just about empty when it comes to genealogy. The Library itself can not afford to purchase alot of genealogy things either, i.e. census records on microfilm. Monroe County is not a rich county as far as money goes either. Monroe is a farming and pupmill county, work is not easy to come by. But, it can be found. However you can go to the courthouse, search til your hearts content. They are not holding back or hiding records!!! They may very well have told the LDS that they could not photocopy the records I don't know I was not there. I have heard of other counties not allowing the LDS to come in and copy records, it happens often. If you have a date or a near date of a marriage you can write to the courthouse and THEY WILL do a search of the record for you and send you a photocopy of the marriage record. for ONE WHOLE DOLLAR. Above all, and those of us on the list that know Monroe County and its people will agree. Monroe County folks are not really all that open to outside folks stirring up trouble. The people in power in the county, have been in power forever, their kin folks were in power before them. Alot is held in a NAME, in the county. One of the first questions folks are asked is who are your people? This is an old county, the people in the county are proud but no one is going to "MAKE" them changes their minds on the way things are done in the county. What we all need to do, is help each other! When researching Monroe Cty, if we can make copies of things of all the families and post them to the list, or send to the archives, or place them on the Monroe Cty web page. Like Deanie has done with the census record. We just need to work together when it comes to researching Monroe County. Sorry for my 2 cents, I will be going to my room now for punishment Debbie Monroe County Surnames I am working on - DANIEL/DANIELS- HARRIS - BARLOW - HOWELL - TURBERVILLE - BOHANNON - GRIFFIN - STABLER - MCKINLEY - HAYLES - MCDONALD - and related lines
