One of the hero's of Texas independence, William Barret Travis I believe, left from the Monroe/Butler Co. area, supposedly after killing a man. He was a school teacher who either married a young girl in his class or got her pregnant and didn't bother to marry her. He got to Texas in time to take command of the troups at the Alamo. The bad judgement displayed in Alabama continued in Texas. He ellected to stay in the Alamo rather than withdraw. The rest is history.
