Thanks, Mary Alice, I knew time of death of my gg grandfather but was hoping hopelessly that I could find out cause of death since he died at the age of 42 in 1862. There is no will that I have found in the records. No one in my family seems to know why or how. Just curious I am, like a cat. Some county clerks have pre-1908 records as well." You can always check with the county for a will. The probate records will help determine time of death. The following information is given for Monroe County.......... "Probate Judge has m, pro & lnd rec from 1832....A courthouse fire destroyed all records prior to 1833." I hope this answers some questions. If your Ancestor happened to draw a pension for Confederate Service there is interesting information to be found in those records. If he left a widow who was pensioned, so much the better. You would query the Alabama Dept. of Archives and History for these.
