Very much of what Pat has said, is true. The name of the daughter of a chief was what the tribe went by. It wasn't the name of Chief. Besides that, there was only one chief per tribe, if it be Creek, Cherokee, Crow, Pawnee, whatever. That is the way it is today. There are groups that where everyone there calls themselves chiefs. There are almost 60 tribes in Okla. and almost that much chiefs, one for each tribe there. People use the title chief too loosely. Most full blood native americans never got any credit, it was most always the breeds. Native americans, so vast, so interesting, a lot has been written that was wrong, just like a lot of other things. After the "Trail Of Tears" it was estimated that less than 200 true indians was left in Ala. a few managed to return from the death trip. millard >From: "Pat Opachick" <pensacola@mindspring.com> >Reply-To: ALMONROE-L@rootsweb.com >To: ALMONROE-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: Re: [ALMONROE-L] Re: 1910 Indian population Monroe County, AL >Date: Sat, 22 Jan 2000 19:03:09 -0500 > >well contrary to most peoples belief Natives did not need to be full blood >to be on rolls .some of the most remembered Chiefs were not full blood >native..The Dawes roll is full of blood quantums of this nature. >depending on what way you are using the word "princess" ...actually there >were no Indian Princes's.that was white mans word.....some times in some >places used in a very ugly manner. If you are using the word relating to >the >idea she was a chiefs daughter, that still does not mean she was full >blood. >Some tribal pow wow's today have a new Indian princess each year......they >are far from full blood. >"genetically pure Indian"..well there are many, but ...... >No matter how much Native blood they had, you can see buy this census they >were of a tribe, and lived the Native ways.
