    3. Cheryll, there has been a lot of confusion about James Brooks of Monroe Co.& John Sawyer Brooks of Butler Co.I went to the court house in Monroeville & dug through the records & also to the Musuem records. I have never seen a middle initial on any record of James Brooks,my GGGrandfather.I will try to share what I have.I have a final estate settlement on James that lists his children also, but have not put it on line yet.I found no record that showed a middle initial for William Brooks of Monroe Co. Al.I couldn't understand why John Sawyer was called the father of the Brooks family in Monroe Co. by some when he moved so late into Butler co. from Georgia. Some people have said James Brooks' middle name was Matthew, but I think that was confusion because his son James Sawyer Brooks married Mary Jane Driver, daughter of Matthew Driver. She was born in Montgomery Co. Al.A granddaughter of Giles Driver hired a researcher to find the family of Giles. She lived in Texas and is now deceased. The researcher could find no connection of Giles to Matthew. In fact, the only records that are known to exist of Matthew is his marriage record,& the 1850 & 1860 census which has his name. However, she said! it was possible that Matthew was a brother because all siblings of Giles could not be found at the time.{The granddaughter said this]I believe there was a connection to Giles, but haven't been able to prove it,but matthew is buried in Garland{There is no marker for his grave}.I have found no proof that John Sawyer Brooks was closely connected to Wm. Brooks.I believe it is possible he was a brother.I believe that Samuel shown on the estate settlement is not the son of John Sawyer, but the son of William. This Samuel is the Samuel that was married 3 times.{Some researchers have said he was the son of John Sawyer Brooks, but so far,I found no proof.} I do know that the Brooks families mentioned in the estate settlement of Wm. Brooks all lived very near each other between Midway & what is now called Lone Star,Al. I know for a fact that the James Sawyer Brooks who married Mary Jane Driver, daughter of Matthew, was the son of James Brooks {Who was the son of Wm.}& Ann KnightJames Sawyer Brooks who married Mary Jane Driver had a sister Nancy Jane Brooks. She married Thomas Jefferson Driver, brother of Mary Jane Driver. They were my Great grandparents. The children of these 2 families were double first cousins.A son of Mary Jane & James Brooks was named Will & was also the brother in law of my Grandfather as well as being double first cousins. These names were used in the Brooks families --Sibithia,Permelia, James Sawyer & John Samuel.I also have GGGGrandparents Rebecca Brooks who married John Griffin. They lived very close to where these Brooks families lived.I have always believed that Rebecca was the sister of Wm. Brooks,b! ut have found no proof.I have just recently found all of the children of James Brooks who was the son of Wm. & Sarah, & who was the father of James Sawyer Brooks who married Mary Jane Driver{This was mispelled in marriage book,& spelled as Devin}I will try to get the estate settlement of James online after Christmas. It has his children listed also.I have several records concerning this that I am trying to get printed out & into the local libraries.I hope this has helped you. ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> To: [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, December 20, 2005 6:40 AM Subject: Re: [ALMONROE-L] William Brooks Linda, Could you please tell me if James, son of William and Sarah Brooks, was named James SAWYER Brooks, and was he married to Mary Jane DEVIN as the article I read said? Which Brooks in this line married Mary Jane DRIVER, and was she the daughter of (or somehow related to) the Giles Driver who was in Macon County, Georgia, in 1840 next to John S. (Sawyer) Brooks? Giles DRIVER (age 50 from Georgia) is on the 1860 Butler Co. Ala. Census living next door to the family of John D. SELLERS, which includes his son Duncan SELLERS who married my gg-aunt Eliza Jane BROOKS (daughter of my gg-gf Felix Brooks) in 1869. On the other side of Giles DRIVER in 1860 was the family of W. H. BINION and his wife Elizabeth Carolyn BROOKS (daughter of John Sawyer Brooks and Rebecca Mitchell who were married in Jones Co. Ga. in 1822). EC BROOKS and husband WH Binion are buried near my gg-gps BROOKS at SELLERS Cemetery in south Butler Co. The name FELIX Brooks is not found in other Brooks lines of my gg-gf's time period (1807-1850), not even his own descendants. One other FELIX Brooks I have found was in Jones Co.. Georgia for the 1840 and 1850 censuses and he married Matilda GRIFFITH/Griffin in Jones Co. Ga. 30 Dec. 1831. I think he relates to the Brooks people below and to my Felix Brooks, and I think my Felix somehow relates to the following people (several of whom had descendants who ended up in Butler Co., Ala. near my Brooks line) Jones COUNTY GA Tax 1811 ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/jones/taxlists/1811.txt<ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/jones/taxlists/1811.txt> Source: "History of Jones County Georgia, For One Hundred Years, Specifically 1807-1907" by Carolyn White Williams CAPTAIN C. 1. Re: [ALMONROE-L] William Brooks
    2. Linda, thanks very much. Your mail answered several questions I had been wondering about. I have fairly well proven the names of the children of John Sawyer Brooks. His gg-gd sent me names of his children from a family Bible belonging to her grandfather, and then I found his estate record in the Conecuh Co. Courthouse. Conecuh County Courthouse Probate Order Book A p. 136 The estate of John S. BROOKS, deceased} Order setting day, Sept. 10, 1867 Noah B. PEACOCK, Adm., praying for order to sell certain real estate of said decedent which cannot be equitably divided among the heirs--only heirs are his children, to wit: 1. the heirs of Edward P. BROOKS, dec'd 2. Mrs. Elizabeth Binion, the wife of Wm. BINION of Butler Co., Ala. 3. Martha W. TURNER, wife of Julius TURNER of Macon, Ga. 4. Drewry W. BROOKS, Butler Co., Ala. 5. Mrs. R.A.R. PEACOCK--wife of petitioner 6. The heirs of R.M.K. BROOKS, dec'd, of Talbert Co. Ga. 7. Mrs. S. L. GARDNER, wife of Julius GARDNER, Talbert Co., Ga. 8. Mrs. Permelia FLOWERS, wife of J. J. FLOWERS, Butler Co., Ala. All of full age except grandchildren of the deceased. Ordered that 21st day of Oct. be the day for hearing application and proofs to support same. Public notice to be given 40 days in the Montgomery Sentinal Notice to be given to children, widow, and custodian of grandchildren of deceased. Ordered that William BEARD be appointed guardian ad litem to represent minors of said deceased. I've found several census records and documents to prove this family. 1 John Sawyer Brooks 1796 - 1867 .. +Rebecca Mitchell 1808 - 1857 ........ 2 Ely Brooks 1824 -[died young] ........ 2 Edward Pickney Brooks 1827 - 1860 ............ +Sarah Frances Stewart 1830 - 1863 ........ 2 Elizabeth Caroline Brooks 1829 - 1915 ............ +William Hardin Binion 1818 - 1866 ........ 2 Martha Beatrice Brooks 1831 - ............ +Julius Andrew Turner 1828 - ........ 2 Rhoda Ann Rebecca "Rody" Brooks 1833 - 1890 ............ +Noah Bishop Peacock, MD 1818 - 1901 ........ 2 Drury William Brooks 1835 - after 1880 ............ +Margaret Turner 1837 - ........ 2 John Sawyer Brooks, Jr. 1836 - 1871 ............ +M. Brooks did not have a son named Samuel, but a Samuel Brooks, born 1790--died between 1860-1865 in Butler Co., could be his brother. They were near each other in 1840 Macon Co. and both had sons named Drury, possibly named after Drury MITCHELL. I have Samuel's estate record from the Butler Co. Courthouse. It is certainly possible that William, Samuel, and John S. were brothers. It is true that John S. Brooks arrived late in Butler Co. (in the 1850s), but I think maybe he had been in Alabama earlier, moved back to Georgia, and then back to Alabama. I've read that he came to Alabama fight in the Indian Wars in 1822. Thanks for your help on the Monroe Co. Brookses.
