    3. My Great Great Grandfather, George Washington LEE, Sr was born October 30, 1842 in Covington County, Alabama and died May 06, 1908. He was the son of William Greenberry LEE and Martha Jane (Pat) TAYLOR. George Washington LEE, Sr married Rhoda Ann Elizabeth MITCHELL (1) on February 17, 1864 at her father's home, Ricey Madeiras John MITCHELL. Rhoda Ann was born March 13, 1846 in Taylor County, Georgia. Died March 05, 1900. Both are buried at Elizabeth Primitive Baptist Church in McKenzie, Alabama. George Washington LEE, Sr served as a private in Company C of the 37th Regiment of the Alabama Volunteers of the army of The Confederate States of America. He lost his right arm on May 24, 1863 in Vicksburg, Mississippi. One record states that he also served with Company B and Company C of the 17th Alabama. However, his grave marker placed by the U.D.C. , as well as his pension papers clearly states that he served in the 37th. He applied for the 'Application For Relief By Soldiers Maimed or Disabled During the Late War', enacted February 27, 1883. His pension was approved by J.L. Powell, Judge of Probate of Butler County on May 12, 1885. George Washington LEE, Sr was ordained a Primitive Baptist minister on November 15, 1871, and was in ministry for 40 years. For ten tears he taught school, and for two terms he was tax collector of Butler County. He represented Butler County in the State legislature in 1903.
