This is a plea for help with understanding the 1880 census: In looking up the name, Sallie Dean, on the 1880 census, I am sent to page 4 of 21, however I found her on page 1 of 21. The problem is that she is one of 4 daughters (Sallie is first on page) but I can't find the head of the household. Please help. Sisters are Emma, Lanalee and Jennie. hunting in Alabama
Helen, From the description you gave, it seems that you are using either Ancestry.com or genealogy.com to search for your ancestor. The page numbers are actually quite different from 1 of 21, etc. I looked in Ancestry.com and they do not list a Sallie or Sally Dean or Deen. There are a couple of Sarahs, though, and Sallie/Sally was often a nickname for Sarah. Now, what is needed to help you narrow this down is anything you can tell us about Sallie and her sisters. Do you know about when they were born? Did they have any brothers? Were they born in AL. I realize that you may be trying to use the census to answer all these questions but anything you can tell us about them will help us try help you find them and who they were living with. And is it Monroe County where you are searching. Helen, OK, I figured this out. You found Sallie Dean and her sisters in Clarke Co., AL. If you had the microfilm for this census, you could go to the page just before Sallie's page. Because of the way Ancestry.com has it online, you cannot do that. However, I went to www.familysearch.org (with the LDS church) and they have the 1880 census transcribed online, for free. I found Sallie and it is listed the same as in the census, showing Sallie, Laualee (Lauralee?), Emma, and Jennie as a household, but you know that isn't so because Sallie, the eldest of this group, is only 11 and she is listed as daughter. However, the LDS sight has the ability to go to the previous household which shows that she is the daughter of Andrew, age 52, and his wife, Maryann, age 44. This is a black family just in case you didn't know. They can be found in the census on page 316D, Jackson (the town), Clarke Co., AL. When I went back to Ancestry.com and entered Andrew Dean, he was on the bottom of page 316D (4 of 21). Sometimes the census takers mixed up pages like this, and then when the pages were microfilmed, they could have been messed up in order, too. I have seen this happen before. Then again, I looked at the 1870 census and found that a son, Samuel, is listed as 6/12 in age who could actually be Sallie. Hmm.... And as you know, we will not find Andrew or his family in the 1860 or previous census records.
