I am looking for information on the family of Adam Wiggins -- they appear on the 1850 and 1860 Monroe County census records. I have reason to think that my great-grandmother, Elisabeth Wiggins (m. Samuel Paul H. Dreading), was his daughter. She was born in 1853, and the only other clue I have as to her identity is that she had a brother named Wiley (I think, maybe, John Wiley, because she named her son, my grandfather, John Wiley). This family has a John (14) on the 1850 census, and also an Elizabeth (age 8, as I recall); then on the 1860 census, John is gone from his parents's home, and there is an Elizabeth aged 7 -- I think this child is my great-grandmother (and that the family's first Elizabeth perhaps died). If anyone has any information that would help me determine if this is the right family or not, please write to me. Faye
Does anyone have information about Camp Douglas? I just learned that my Grandfather Alfred Bennett Roberson/Robertson was taken there as a prisoner from Tennessee. I have been told that Alfred Bennett walked home with his friend John Thornton from Tennessee. Were the prisoners provided any transportation from Illinois to Tennessee? I can't see the men walking from Illinois to Alabama. If anyone knows of any info available on this prison that has been called the Andersonville of the north, I would like to have your sources. Another person just wrote me on this board about William james Smith . My great Grandfather was Zach Lewis Smith . I have a picture of his father and mother John Smith and Sarah Hughes I no little about his brothers and sisters I do know that they came from Butler county to monroe county and settled around Frisco city. the town they came from in Butler county was called Oakey Streak John Smith fought in the Civil war I have his war records! I think that William james Smith was my Zach L Smith's younger brother but not for sure! Harrelson. One of my relatives believed Mary Ann came from Wilcox County, AL. On the 1850 census of Escambia County, FL, it lists Mary Ann as being 19 years old - married to Hugh Chisholm. It also shows she was from Alabama. I would place too much faith on the age from the census - since it's not always accurate. I have a Mary Ann born in 1834 to Archibald Smith McMillan and Sarah McEachern who was married to George Davison. Also have a Mary Ann who was the daughter of Hector McMillan and Anna McMillan born about 1837. How far is Old Scotland be from Beatrice? Does anyone have any info. about the families in these areas? What about the Old Scotland Presbyterian Church and its members? Hugh had land patents in Monroe Cty... but I haven't been able to locate him on a census.
