    2. RUBY MOORE
    3. Ken, Thanks for sending this information. I am trying to research my great grandparents families (Hadley, Wiggins and Byrd). I think we might have crossed paths before. My Great Grandparents are Fred and Fannie(Wiggins)Hadley. I had not researched the Byrd side before, and I am just getting my feet good and wet. I did find a person who wrote a book on the Byrd family some time ago (1994) and obtained a cd copy of the book, so I am hoping to get to go through it soon. We have been in the process of getting ready to move and trying get everything ready, so I am sorry it has taken so long to get back with you. Jones at the residence of the bride's father in Wilcox County, Alabama on 28th Hon. Charles L. Scott (Representat4ive in Congress for California) to Miss Ann V. Gorin, eldest daughter of G. Gorin, esq. Source: Marriage, Death and Legal Notices From Early Alabama Newspapers, 1819-1893 compiled by Pauline Jones Gandrud, Southern Historical Press, Easley, S.C., c. 1981, p. 588 Ann Vivian Gorin's Mother's Obituray Mobile Daily Register 30 April 1862, Wednesday Page 2 Column 5 Died at Magnolia, the residence of her husband, G. Gorin, jEsq., in the county of Marengo, on the morning of Tuesday 22d inst. Mrs. Jane Gorin. Thus has it pleased an all-wise Providence to take from her career of usefulness and her devoted family this admirable and pious lady. Her loss to them is irreparable. Mrs. Gorin was no common lady in vigorous intellect a kind and generous dispostion, and an avowed, professing and sincere Christian. Long will she be held in affectionate remembrance, for her charity to the poor and her kindness as a neighbor. Richmond papers will please copy. Ann Vivian's Aunt Virginia P. Wormley's Obituary also has California associatitons. Mobile Daily Register 20 January 1870, Thursday Morning Page 3 Column 4 On the 25th inst., of pneumonia, at the residence of her sister, Mrs. R.G. Scott, near Claiborne, Ala., Mrs. Virginia P. Strode, relict of the late Charles Bayard Strode, of San Francisco, California. Sadly we record the death of one endeared to all by her fine qualities, and upright, noble nature. She had just returned to her early home, after years of absence, to settle among her kindred, where her merry laugh, joyous spirit, and brilliant wit, gave light and sunshine to their hearts and home. Blessed with health, wealth, and a troupe of friends her future prospects bright and alluring, life could promise no more. Generous and sympathetic in her friendships, kind and affectionate in her domestic sphere, earnest, truthful and charitable in all her relations in life, praise falls justly as a tribute to merit and virtue. Intellectual, cultivated, amiable and loving, she was the idol of her sister's heart, who in her desolation "mourns as one without hope." Weep for the living, not for the dead. Weep for the weary hearted. And we pay the homage of a sympathetic tear for the bereaved friends and relatives. Richmond (Va.) and San Francisco papers will please notice. Ann Vivian Goren Scott was educated at the Visitation Convent in Washington, D.C. at the expense of her cousin Emma Eugenea Dellet Gibbons. I will find you more facts as I am able to abstract them from the mass of materials I have. Chuck

Your earlier post indicated you have a portrait of Scott. I would like a copy if you care to share it. An emailed copy would be fine. I have an unpublished draft of his memoirs. Much was left out of the book version. Scott lived in my home town during the gold rush. I have been researching the 75 passengers that travelled with him on the ship Glenmore in 1849. IF you are intersted I have some other things on him too.

As far as I know the name still applies to the area. However, it is also now known as Eliska. The only explanation I can give for the name change is possibly a post office designation. Mount Pleasant was never an incorporated town so perhaps the new name evolved from an estate, ie. plantation name, which was located in the same approximate area. Over the passage of years most of the families who originally lived at Mount Pleasant moved for economic reasons that now there are few people who remember its original name. Charles J. Torrey

This was the first location that Malachi and Georgiana lived after marrying. I have been trying to document location history along with family history. Mal and GV were at McKinleys from 1880 - 1900 based on census reports. By 1910, they were living at Suggsville in Clarke County. Mal's father, James Guthral Stabler and his wife, Nancy Jane Presnall are listed at Burnt Corn from 1840 - 1870. By 1880 they were at McKinleys. I have been trying to locate a home site and/or burial site for them. Nancy's family owned Silver Creek Plantation in Clarke County. James was the son of John Jacob Stabler who died in 1844 at Claiborne. I am also searching for his homesite/burial site. Also the name of his wife.

If you can visit the Monroe County Courthouse, seek the Tract Books (there are 2 volumes). These will tell you where Stabler 1st settled public land (either with a military warrant or homestead). 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/HU.2ADI/1654.3 Message Board Post: I believe that you will find Malachi Stabler lived near the McKinley Post Office community in 1870. (today known as Wainwright). The 1870 census designation of Dennard's Bluff has confused many family researchers unfamiliar with the county. If you can visit the Monroe County Courthouse, seek the Tract Books (there are 2 volumes). These will tell you where Stabler 1st settled public land (either with a military warrant or homestead). The next step will be to check Deed Book A, both direct and reverse indices.

    1. Re: [ALMONROE] Byrd Family of Monroe County
    2. The Byrd family probably did not live in Burnt Corn burring the 1860 - 1870 period. They probably lived in Old Texas/Simpkinsville area. The only way to know for sure is by checking beat numbers. The 1860 - 1870 census only used two Post Offices, Burnt Corn and Dennards Bluff. For specifics, ask Steve Stacey. Grant
