Where is your family cemetery in Alabama? Who is buried there? One of the sites where you can register your family cemetery is www.alabama-cemetery-preservation.com Lyndall Maxwell lymaxwell@sbcglobal.net MY NAMES: Maxwell, Bolton, Rumph, Boyles
I emailed the publisher that question a week ago, but haven't received a response. Kathryn
I had not purchased the book after learning that many names beginning with W were left out and three of my main lines are Wiggins, Walker, and Wallace. Was excited to see they were working on an addendum but wondered how they could possibly justify an additional charge since they were presented with all information to begin with. I doubt it will do any good but think an email from all who have or would have purchased the book if complete couldn't hurt. Just want to be sure this, <HeriPubCon@aol.com> from your original message, is the correct email address. I am still trying to identify the G Washington Lee in the records below. In the will given below of GWL, a son "Sam" and a daughter "Alice Ledkin" are mentioned. George Washington Lee, son of Thomas Lovard Lee and Alice Caroline Lee, had a brother named "Sam" and his mother is named "Alice." Could this be a clue? Dear MITCHELL Researchers, Some of our cousins are trying to restore the small cemetery where our Great Great Great Grandfather Drury Mitchell is buried. Born in Virginia about 1765, died July 10, 1857, Drury married Rhoda Rebecca Mary LASSITER on December 30, 1800 in Green County, Georgia. Drury and Mary were the parents of Ricey Madeiras John MITCHELL (R.M.J. MITCHELL was a grandfather of our grandmother Pearl LEE HIGDON.) During the 1920's most of the tombstones were used in a nearby field to stop erosion. CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT !!!??? Wallace MITCHELL, a top Mitchell researcher now has Drury Mitchell's headstone in safe keeping until the cemetery can be restored. Sadly, we'll never know Drury's exact grave site, but at least we know where the cemetery is exactly located. If anyone wants to help with this project you can email Wallace Mitchell at: WLightside@aol.com Any help would be appreciated, Blessings from your cousin, Odessa WLightside@aol.com wrote: hello Odessa, I went to Robert Hall's house in Florida and picked up Drury Mitchell's tombstone today. As you know he was the grandfather of Rhoda Ann Elizabeth Mitchell Lee. Robert and I wanted to get several family members together to help Vaudie Knight restore the Brooks Chapel Cemetery, it is on her land between Garland and McKenzie, Alabama. If you have any Ideas or would like to help in any way let me know. We also want to put up a marker for the cemetery and fence it in. talk later, Wallace --------------------------------- Access over 1 million songs - Yahoo! Music Unlimited.
My Great Great Grandfather, George Washington LEE, Sr was born October 30, 1842 in Covington County, Alabama and died May 06, 1908. He was the son of William Greenberry LEE and Martha Jane (Pat) TAYLOR. George Washington LEE, Sr married Rhoda Ann Elizabeth MITCHELL (1) on February 17, 1864 at her father's home, Ricey Madeiras John MITCHELL. Rhoda Ann was born March 13, 1846 in Taylor County, Georgia. Died March 05, 1900. Both are buried at Elizabeth Primitive Baptist Church in McKenzie, Alabama. George Washington LEE, Sr served as a private in Company C of the 37th Regiment of the Alabama Volunteers of the army of The Confederate States of America. He lost his right arm on May 24, 1863 in Vicksburg, Mississippi. One record states that he also served with Company B and Company C of the 17th Alabama. However, his grave marker placed by the U.D.C. , as well as his pension papers clearly states that he served in the 37th. He applied for the 'Application For Relief By Soldiers Maimed or Disabled During the Late War', enacted February 27, 1883. His pension was approved by J.L. Powell, Judge of Probate of Butler County on May 12, 1885. George Washington LEE, Sr was ordained a Primitive Baptist minister on November 15, 1871, and was in ministry for 40 years. For ten tears he taught school, and for two terms he was tax collector of Butler County. He represented Butler County in the State legislature in 1903. I'm not 100% sure which George Washington Lee this is. I don't think he's George (born 1856) son of Thomas and Alice Lee. At first, I thought for sure he was G.W., son of Joel W. Lee and Catherine Sellers (because he was next door to their other son John H. Lee in 1880 Butler Co.), but I also think he could be George (born c. 1840), son of Lovard Lee and Matilda Powell. I hope to find out for sure which one he is. There were so many Georges in this Lee family! Freda, My g-g-grandmother, Lucinda (Lucy) Groom, went to Russell Co., ca 1834, probably from the Pine Apple area. According to family tradition she went there because she was pregnant. A year or two later she married Henry Brantley in Russel Co. They are on the 1850 Wilcox census. I'm not sure if any Turners were in that family but there must have been some reason she went -- or was sent -- to Russell Co. I'm not doing much research lately. I'm trying to record a lot of music from old vinyl albums and live tapes to CD. The tapes are from concerts Darla and I have produced. Our radio station is streaming on the WWW now. Our show can be heard 3 - 5 PM Wednesday at WWW.KZFR.ORG. It might not work on a phone modem but comes in good on broadband. Hi, does anyone researched the Thomas and Elizabeth Turner family? Thomas and Elizabeth are found in the 1850 and 1860 Russell Co censuses: Thomas Turner 45 SC Elizabeth 30 Alapha 13 GA James 10 AL Thomas 8 Adeline 6 George 4 John 2 1860 Census: Thos Turner 49 S. Carolina E. Turner 41 J. L. Turner 20 W. T. 17 A. Turner 15 David Turner 3 "Thomas’s family is living next door (1769) to N. J. Robinson in 1860 Census. (This would be Nathaniel J. Robertson.) Another researcher shared this info with me: By 1870 Thomas Turner has died and I do not know where he was buried. Being they were in Deadfall he could be buried in either Ft Dale or Antioch East. According to the 1866 census one member of Thomas's family has died from sickness; this would be Wm Thomas. The two youngest boys, George and John, died before 1860 and are probably buried in the Mt Olive East cemetery. Thomas and his family lived in Russell Co AL in 1840 and 1850 and moved to the Butler Co AL area with the Bush family around 1855. You will find them on the rolls of the Mt Olive East Baptist Church. Thomas and Elizabeth Turner kept Nancy Ann Conway during the war . Nancy Ann later married John W. Sims." Does anyone have info on JOHN W. SIMS WHO MARRIED NANCY ANN CONWAY? Thomas and Elizabeth's daughter Alafaree "Allie" Turner married Nathaniel Frank Robertson, son of the above neighbor Nathaniel J. Robertson.) Their son James L. married Elizabeth C. Smith. Thomas Turner's brother Abraham married Judith Boddie. Their children married into the John and Frances Bush family of Barnwell, S.C. Abraham and Judith are listed in the 1860 Butler County Federal Census: A. W. Turner 54 J. H. 46 C. 23 J. A. 21 Mary A. 19 James 16 W.C. 14 Nancy 10 L. Where in the book is it? It has no index. I have look and I was not able to find the names listed. Monroe Journal has plenty. Are these articles in Kathy McCoy's book or the Monroe County Heritage book? My article about the two Taylor men is included in the Heritage book. I called the Monroe Journal this afternoon and order Kathy McCoy's book by phone. A very friendly, helpful lady took my order and will ship the book to me shortly at a cost of $20 plus $5 shipping to North Carolina. I look forward to receiving it, since Kathy McCoy always does a fine job of researching whatever she publishes. We are lucky to have her in Monroe County, diggin' up info about our ancestors and their lives long ago. Kathryn Griffin
