    1. [ALMONROE] James Garrett??
    2. Freda Noble
    3. In the 1880 Monroe County Census, James Garrett, HH 9, is 26 years old, listing living alone. Next door, in HH 10, is Jos C. Garrett, age 22, with wife Rachael, age 22, son Edward, 11, and daughter Laura 6. Does anyone know if James and Jos are brothers? If so, who is their father? Thank you. 3. Been busy working a 70 hour week so I couldn't answer this in a more timely manner. I have to comment about the Monroe Journal Centennial Edition (of which I have a copy). Some of the information in that article has since been proven incorrect from other records. The article was from family memory and we all do make mistakes. I am a descendent of Silas Garrett, SUPPOSED brother of Joseph and Caswell Garrett who were in Lowndes and Monroe Counties. As to brothers John and James, there doesn't seem to be substantiating evidence for this. In Lowndes County was James Garrett who married Zilpha Cheek. This James was a son of Edward Garrett, Jr. and Eleanor Higgins. If anything, this James could be a cousin of Caswell, Joseph and Silas. I have lots on this family, with substantiating evidence. The biggest problem is that we truly do NOT know where our Garretts came from originally. There are DAR papers that Alva Garrett Current-Garcia submitted in the 1960s that have us connected to James Garrett of Laurens County, SC. Problem is there are no substantiating papers to prove this. This particular James was a son of Edward Garrett, Sr. and his wife, Ann West Ousley/Owsley and brother of Edward, Jr.. Both Edward Sr., and Ann left estates in Laurens County. Edward did name his son, James, but none of James's heirs. Edward was not happy with James and told him to straighten up or loose out. Ann's estate named James's children, NONE of which were Caswell, Joseph, or Silas. It is certainly possible that this James had more than one wife and children with both, but NONE of these older children (Caswell, etc) were named in Ann's estate. Caswell was born in SC as was Joseph, per the 1850 Census. Silas was born in Georgia from the same census. Caswell married in Jones County, Georgia. Now, we have NO documentation to say where James, son of Edward, was. Did he go to Georgia??? Alva Current-Garcia's DAR papers rely on a speech given in about 1949 that James was part of a massacre that occurred at Fort Dale when Silas was about 9 (or in about 1814). Family lore says that Caswell, Joseph and Silas's father was killed in this time and that their mother was scalped about two years later. We have nothing to substantiate this. To try to make a long story short, we really don't know who Caswell, Joseph and Silas's father was nor were they came from in SC or in Georgia. As to the Robinson-Garrett connection, my grandfather, Ephraim Spencer Garrett, I, married Francis Kathleen Robinson. There is one connection. Another is that Martha Jane Garrett (daughter of Joseph Garrett & Nancy (Joliph) Jolliffe) married William H. Robinson, son of Joseph Robinson and Nancy Duet. This Joseph Robinson was born in SC per the 1850 Census in Lowndes County and we have not been able to connect him to the other Robinsons in Lowndes at the time. William Robinson and his brother, Cornelius, had migrated from Anson County, North Carolina with their father, Tod Robinson, to Autauga County in about 1818 or there abouts. The brothers both settled and lived their lives in Lowndes County and are buried there. So, the Joseph Robinson from SC is not likely related to William and Cornelius. It seems a coincidence that these two Robinson families married Garretts. Anna Jean's ancestors are correct. Her grandmother and my grandmother worked on family history together, from some letters I have. Ardis, along with Fanny (my grandmother) and another cousin worked on the family history in the 1930s. I can't off the top of my head remember the other cousin's name, but I do have letters she wrote on this. At any rate,. Anna Jean does have her ancestry correct, except for the brothers and where they came from. We don't really know for sure what part of SC Caswell and Joseph were in. I am more than willing to share what I have and the sources. 3. Loretta, So many of the grave markers are gone. I also wondered how many graves are located in the area that has become overgrown now. Is there any list/map showing whom was buried there? I have seen several transcriptions of the cemetery. I am trying to narrow down exactly where his land was located in the Finchburg area. I am not sure where Jemima married him-but they are said to have taken the old National Road to Al. after stopping for supplies and leaving part of the Broughton Family-her brothers and her sons by first husband-John Cannon. Dec. 1816- They came from Sumter Co SC-by wagon train. Were there other Runnels children in the Monroe, Conecuh area? Ms. Gerry Hill-Albany Ga.

Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.alabama.counties.monroe/2882/mb.ashx Message Board Post: In 1988, a cousin in my Stabler line did some research on John Jacob Stabler of Monroe Co. In some of his notes he states "the wills of John Jacob Stabler abt. 1844 and his son Samuel, who died abt. 1850 are recorded in Monroe County books 1 and 2. I have contacted the archieves in Montgomery and I am waiting for the information. But I did wonder if anyone has a copy of the actual will and estate papers of John Jacob Stabler (b. 1772 SC)or Samuel? In his notes he states that his estate was to have gone to his wife until her death at which time it was to be divided equally amoung his children but his land was to go to his sons James and Malachi. His son Samuel was in business in Mobile and did not receive any land. His daughter Elizabeth had died but her children received her share. The will did not list all the children but when it was probated these children were listed-Samuel, James, Malachi, Catherine Whissenhunt, Harriet Cobb, Caroline Stacie, and James Bryant hus! band of Elizabeth, deceased. Each of the children received $576.77. The settlement of Jacob's estate was not large, however another estate was probated about 1850, this time for Samuel Stabler and again the same heirs (minus Samuel are listed. The land and property sold on Jan. 2, 1851. Also in the 1850 Mortality Census a Samuel Stabler age 45 died in March 1850. The cause of death was "fits". All of this is taken from his notes. I would like to verify this information. If anyone in Monroe County can obtain the wills and estate papers, I will gladly pay for the copies and research. Brenda

    3. Hi Gladys, I will send you a copy of his will. I have also gone to Monroe county to search for his grave. If he was buried at the old Claiborne cemetery, chances are that his grave was washed out into the river in one of the many floods since 1844. E-mail me directly at barbaragerald@comcast.net and I will send you a copy of his will. I descend from Jacob's son James.
