The last visit to Beauvoir we saw the short film about the history of Jefferson Davis. It was excellent in identifying all the significant and now historical contributions he had made to the US prior to Secession. Sadly, it appears that this too oft gets forgotten. It was Davis' own efforts to modernize the US Army after the Mexican War that later contributed to its sucess against the CSA's Armies. Deborah
Greetings on this the 191st anniversary of the birth of one of this Nation's most This Honorable Statesman was born in Kentucky, in 1808 and graduated from the Transylvania University, in Lexington, Kentucky, and from the U.S. Military Academy 1828. Retiring from active military service in 1835, to undertake the agrarian life, he was elected to the United States Congress in 1845. Resigning from Congress in 1846, this statesman/soldier returned to the active military and was a recognized military hero in the Mexican War. He subsequently returned to politics and was a U. S. Senator from 1847 to 1851. From 1853 to 1857, he was Secretary of War in the administration of President Pierce and directed one of the most intense upgrades of the military in U.S. history. This Southern gentleman returned to the United States Senate from 1857 until his resignation in 1861. This honoured American? Jefferson Davis. June 3rd remains a State Holiday in Alabama. Celebrate all of America's history. Yr. Obt. Svt., D. A. Bass-Frazier

Pam you definitely come off of my husbands line as does Katherine who is on this list as well. My husbands comes from John Anders, Andress, Andrews in Bladen county NC to Joseph who died in Sumter District SC to Stephen who married Nancy Singleton and moved into Monroe county Alabama. Bill comes from Stepehn Singleton son of the above Stephen and Nancy. You come from their son Issac and Katherine comes from their son Evant or Avant or sometimes Evan. I know nothing about your Rikards but I have assumed Rickards mill probably came from the Rikards here in SC at some point. I live in Lexington SC but have only been here for 8 years. Rikards is an old name around here. There is a Rikards nursing Home just 1/2 mile from my house that is ver y old as an organization. If you make any connections back to this area I'll help if I can. (27 records center cartons). SUMMARY In 1867, the United States Congress passed the Reconstruction Acts, and these acts set forth the means by which the former Confederate states could gain readmittance to the union. To elect delegates to the Alabama Constitutional Convention, a male voter, twenty-one years of age or older, had to swear a loyalty oath stating that he had never supported or participated in a rebellion against the United States government, that he had never committed a felony offense, that he had never served as an elected or appointed official of the United States and supported or participated in a rebellion against the United States government, and that he would remain loyal to the government of the United States (Ala. Code, [1867] 83-84). This series consists of bound volumes of the loyalty oaths from each county in the state and from major cities in the state. The oaths contain the voter's name, county of residence, his oath swearing loyalty to the United States government, the voting precinct, and the voter registrar's name.
