Can anyone tell me anything about Dennards Bluff in Monroe Co.? A lot of people moved there before the 1870 census but apparently moved away before the next one. Even the Geographic Names Information System at USGS can only say it was a 'historic post office" but nothing else. A lot of MIDDLETONs and other moved to Dennards Bluff before 1870. Why? It looks like an area with no major county roads. Timber for steamboats? My great-grandmother and great grandfather died before 1872 so I think they are buried near Dennards Bluff. Polar Bridge Cemetery and Rocky Hill Church appear to be close to where Dennards Bluff was but I can't get any current information. I'm going to be in Alabama in October and I would love to find those places. Thanks, Grant Johnston in Chico, CA

Grant, wasn't Dennards'Bluff near Claiborne...near the Alabama River? Maybe everyone moved because of yellow fever. Claiborne was a full -fledged city until the epidemic...city blocks, etc. Freda Freda and Ted Noble tnoble@mcn.org

Barbara, My Hardy Powell was married to Missouri Powell. I don't know her maiden name, or their dates of birth. I know they delivered my grandfather in 1989, so I believe these people are a little before their time, although with the family name factor, there may be a connection somehow. I have seen this census before and wondered about that. I will keep on trudging, and if I find out more information that may link the two, I will surely pass the information on to you. Thank you so much for your kind response. Freda and Ted, My grandparents are buried in Buena Vista. It is easy to find and is well kept. I haven't seen it listed on the internet but the Monroe County library has a cemetery file and I copied a portion of it there. The only Roberson listed there is Elizabeth Larson Roberson 1868-1930 (Parents: Martha Holder and a Mr. Larson or Lawson, of Burnt Corn, AL) Hope this help in some way. I think I must have missed the look up for WATSON.....I was forwarded the message when asked and I joined this email group right away, but I guess I was too slow. Would it be too much trouble to ask you for a repeat? pat watson opachick
Hi, Beuna Vista is still a small community, there are a few houses there. The church is still in good shape, I don't know if they still have services. THe last time I was down there it looked like it was still being used. The cemetery is well-kept and easily accessible. I do not have a listing of the cemetery that I know of, but I will look again. The status of the physical condition of a book is a legitimate reason to prohibit photocopying. Also, some rare books, meaning rare by the accepted professional librarian standards, may also be excluded from routine user photocopying. The physical act of copying is far harder on bindings than many common users may realize. Opening a book until you hear the "pop" is NOT a good thing despite this too often being done by someone preparing to make photocopies. However, a book that is part of any library collection should otherwise be subject to the fair use exception of the US Copyright laws and thus, available for photocopying as would any other item. Sadly, all workers in libraries are not of the card carrying librarian variety and may not be cognizant of these principals. Your Obedient Servant, D. A. Bass-Frazier (semi-reformed Reference Librarian)
Thanks very much for your look-up offer in the 1850 Orleans Parish census. I would appreciate a check for a Dr. John Torrey or Torry and a David Torrey or Torry. Thank you for your assistance. Is there any GENTRY's listed in the "Old Federal Road in Monroe ......... THanks Harvey Gentry
Deborah... Some libraries prohibit copying books that are out of print and/or in poor condition. This is true of the Clayton Genealogy Library in Houston, TX. I had to buy a copy of "The History of Marion County, South Carolina" because their one copy was rather old. They have some of the books marked as "Do Not Photocopy". It has to do with the fragility. They wouldn't even allow a scan. Why would a library prohibit copying? Certainly the Mobile Public does not nor has any other library that I have used that included Brantley's book. By the by, the listing of the Middleton Cem. in this vol. is missing quite a number of the actual marked graves. Nevertheless, some of the other information has been useful.
