Most of the time you depend on the grave markers, bibles, family knowledge.. You can get marriage dates in Monroe County from 1833 on and in Conecuh Co 1866 -on.. They had a fire that destroyed records.. There are some very limited birth records -- in ledger books. I can't recall at the moment if I found these in Conecuh or Monroe county's probate records -- or both! However, these were EXTREMELY limited in scope and span so it would not be a very probable source of information. -- Yr. Obt. Svt., D. A. I tried to get a birth certificate for my grandfather who was born in 1889 in Monroe County. I was told there were none for pre-1900. How did they keep records of births if that is the case. -----Original Message----- From: dabf [mailto:dabf@zebra.net] Sent: Wednesday, September 29, 1999 11:40 AM To: ALMONROE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [ALMONROE-L] Finding birth/death dates Some Census data may list the birthdates; headstones, Bibles, marriage certificates, etc. Also, sometimes a birth cert. for someone post 1900 may include this. Emma, Thanks so much for your response. I will contact the Grand Lodge of Alabama. I would expect them to have a list of former members. I have one article about the first Masonic Lodge in the area but it was not as detailed as your information. Cynthia in New Orleans
Hello, There is a new list out for those African Americans researching the Davis name. african-american-davis-families@egroups.com
Cynthia, my father was a member of Alabama Lodge #3 in Monroe County, one of the oldest lodges in Alabama. Unfortunately he is no longer living. According to the Monroe Journal 1866-1869 Centennial Edition, the Lodge was originally at Perdue Hill, MonroeCounty and was moved in 1884 to Claiborne. I mean physically moved, the whole building. Elsewhere there is a tiny notation that it was moved by L. Medlock, whom I assume was my Uncle Lex Medlock, You may be able to find more by contacting the Grand Lodge of Alabama. IMy experience has been that if there is a Masonic marker on the grave, the deceased was a Mason. I'm sure there are other folks on this list who are more knowledgeable than I am, and I'm sure their help will be forthcoming. Emma in NM
Hi, all... Does anyone have data concerning Masonic Lodges in Monroe County around the mid 1800's or know of resources concerning this subject? Also, if a family member's tombstone has a Masonic symbol on it, is it safe to assume he was a member of the Masons? Any help would be appreciated. Hello everyone, Rayford Wesley Daniel, son of Leroy Daniel and Cindy Stabler husband of Lillian passed away this morning Sept, 27-1999. Rayford stood tall with his hair of red, and told all who would listen. Hello my name is Rayford Daniel, I am the oldest living Daniel. Rayford was born in 1912 he was 87 years old, he will be missed. I am very glad I had the chance to speak with him and get as much family history from him as I could write down. He talked to fast sometimes, he remembered it all so well, and I hope that I have transcribed what he told me correctly. I hope everyone takes the time and speaks with their family elders and record what they remember its something that we have very little time to do as the days turns into years. Thanks God Bless everyone Debbie
Thank you so very much Shirley. The info is certainly appreciated.
