Kay: The Monroe County marriages are on my CD#248 - Alabama Marriages. That's how I found my Henry and Rosannah Kelly Taylor's marriage. Kathryn
Thank you, thank you, thank you, a million times thank you!!!!! I have been trying to find this information for so, so long. It is so neat that people are willing to spend time helping one another this way. The Hardy Powell I was looking for married Missouri Ballard, I assume in Monroe County. They were married 16 years before they had my grandfather. WOW!!! Thank you again, and God Bless! How can we force the Judge to slide over and make way for progress?
If I had the time to sit there and copy on hard copy with paper and pen all the marriages we could post them..but there a too many.. the marriage records from 1833 to 1880 is on the Monroe co page, thanks to a book that was transcribed on line where anyone could get it.. "The Judge in Monroe County will not let them photo the records here.. and we have from 1833 til present in the record room" Hi...I think we all need to write Otha Lee Biggs, the Probate Judge, and explain to him how important these records are to all of us. The LDS team, I understand, was not permitted to copy the records and that is why, I think, very little about families in Monroe County is found in the LDS libraries. It would be so great if the MC records were on line, too. I have a new cd...For marriages in AL, GA, SC. dates depending on Counties. The sad part no Monroe Co. or Tallapoosa Co. Alabama.. but lists almost all the other counties. Most of the yrs are the early years of 1800, a few counties in Ga list the later years. To request a look please....be specific as possible. LAST name first, and the county. If I can't find it in that county, I will do a search of the complete cd. Thanks! Let the hunt begin!!!!! Deanie
Was there someone on the Monroe County List looking for McGillivray family? This is posted on another list that I am on, I thought I would pass it along in the hopes of helping someone find their family members Debbie Lt Col John McGillivray was prominent in the history of West Florida. As a British officer he led British volunteers in a visit to the defense of Natchez from Mobile I think it was. Also he owned land grants on the Mobile River and in Mobile vicinity. This from memory. If anyone is intrested, this concerns the Mobile area and it's history. It must be emphasized that the McGillivrays were British Loyalist and did what they could to put down the American Revolution. It's leaders they called "Liberty Boys" in contempt. Lots I didn't learn in high school about the Revolution, that maybe I should have. Woodie
I think this has been posted before, but it has been a while. If you ever need to find the location of anywhere current or in the past, you need to know about this URL for the U. S. Geological Survey. http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html The best part is that it also will give you Latitude and Longitude so that you can find it on a map. If you don't have a map, it also gives you the name of the USGS map to order from them that has the feature on it (maps are $4). CMcCoy
Very well said, Debbie!! Gail <Just to thank Deanie for her work, and to underline her thoughts on <transcribing census records. <Thanks Deanie!!! <As everyone knows that has looked at microfilms of census records, they are <not easy to read on the machines. I have had trouble finding my own family even if I <knew the names of everyone I was looking for in family. Census, I have been working on. I received quite a few letters asking about name changes, etc when i done the 1850. Please remember, that transcribing this old census is not a easy job, and I transcribed as the census. But,....I am open for suggestions. The Program I use to enter the info, tells all transcribers to spell names, jobs, etc, as the census taker did on the census. Please take that into consideration, thats all I ask.
