Is the perception that one cannot copy records from the Monroe County Probate based on actual experience? I am able to go there 1-2 times a year and have had NO problem in obtaining photocopies of any record so desired. Copies are $1 per page; yes, its pricey but not untypical of courthouse charges. I have requested copies of documents by mail and have quickly obtained them. While some of the staff were seemingly unaware of the contents of the Probate vault, they did not actively prohibit use of the volumes. This is not unrealistic inasmuch the clerical workers are just that -- lowly paid clerical workers processing current fees, etc. Deborah Bass-Frazier
Hello, I am kind of new to most people in Monroe Co., but I'd like to say ( You go Girl ) Debbie!!!!! Come on out of your room!!! We all, I am sure understand the situation there!!! And Debbie, I am also working on Barlow! I have a Lawson Monroe Bratcher born in Monroe Co. But the Barlow I am working on is Emmie Barlow-McPike, b. abt 1875 and lived in Jackson and Lawrence Counties in AR, for sometime! She married (Washy) McPike. no dates on him other than he was born before 1894, when their first born arrived. Does any of this sound familiar to your Barlows? Thanks for you time!!! Sincerely, Tina Romans-Bode
I have never had a problem with the personnel at the courthouse - in fact they have always been more than helpful. I am aware that people think Monroe Co is a poor county but I just don't believe that. Jackson Co, MS is a "poor" county too; however, they have one of the best librarys I have ever seen. They have ALL of the Alabama census records ever published in addition to numerous other states census records. In addition, they have racks and racks of books, marriage records, land records and numerous other items I have never touched. This is due to the active genealogy personnel employed and volunteers in the library doing a wonderful job. I do believe that Judge Biggs has an obligation to protect all public records in the courthouse. It is my understanding that the courthouse burned one time and all records were lost. In my opinion, anyone who would turn down an offer to preserve the records - free of charge - is mentally impaired. LDS does not charge anyone for using their web site. I do not understand anyone trying to turn this into a religious issue. And I certainly don't think LDS was trying to tell the people of Monroe Co how to run their business. In case anyone is wondering - NO I am not a member of LDS.
I have searched the court house at least 6 times in the past two years, and I have not had a problem with staff or obtaining information. I live in Pensacola, Fl. Gail RothGH@aol.com
That's the way it should be.....And I have never heard of anyone not cooperating with LDS. My hiuband has ancestors from Monroe Co........Is it diffucult to get into the courthouse to do research???.....I would like to plan a trip for research....but it would be useless if there are problems.....And I live a long way..... Had trouble with a courthouse in a county near where I live.....Contacted the District Judge who straightned the problem out....The problem was with the probate judge..... Those records belong to you, if they are your ancestors..... Felix Cannon married Zadie Crapps on 5 Aug 1896.
James (Jim) Moniac and Mary Ann Williams The name Moniac was also written as Manac, Munac, Manack, and McNac. These spellings were all used for this person...just according to who was writing, I guess. Does anyone know whether or not Judge Biggs has an e-mail address? I am going to write to him but I had rather not spend 33 cents on him if I can help it.

I did some research in Monroe County in the mid 1980's and didn't run into any difficulties. At that time the staff was very pleasant. Has Otha Lee Biggs been the Probate Judge forever? When I began doing genealogy a little over 20 years ago one of the first documents I sent for was a marriage record. He was PJ then. Mary Alice in CA
Is there a record for Felix Cannon? Unsure of wife's name. They were living in Macon County according to the 1910 census. Thanks, Kathy Campo Researching WYATT, BAKER, BLALOCK, CANNON, ELMORE, GREEN, JONES, JOHNSON, PUGH in AL/NC/SC/TN
We have a County full of wonderful history but so much of it is not recorded where everyone can get to it.. I wished there were lots of records in the Archives in Montgomery but a lady that has been there says the shelves set aside for Monroe County are almost empty.. In Ohio, a directive went out to all public record holders from the Governor that all records were to be made available to anyone who wanted to see them AND that all employees in charge of the records were to be helpful in every way. It worked! Never have we found employees seemly so willing to help us and all records were made available..Freda Freda and Ted Noble tnoble@mcn.org
>How can we force the Judge to slide over and make way for progress? > > >==== ALMONROE Mailing List ==== >**** The Monroe County Mailing list is now archived >at http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ALMONROE-L I thought perhaps if we would write gentle persuasive letters, explaining the importance of the records to all who are researching Monroe County, Judge Biggs might have a change of heart. Ted and I were in the courthouse a few years ago and the staff was very pleasant. All of the records just weren't available. As far as I know, Otha Lee is still judge. Does everyone know about the Monroe Journal's web page. George Thomas Jones writes a weekly column about the old days and there is a genealogy page for inquiries.
