    3. Hello Tina, I checked and I hate to say I don't have a Emmie Barlow in my database. Our Barlow's came from NC into Conecuh Cty some into Monroe Cty. I start with William Barlow b 1776 to his son William b 1802 to Lewis A. Barlow b 1835 in Conecuh Cty he married Elizabeth HOWELL, their daughter Jane Barlow married William Harris 1879 Monroe Cty, which goes on down to me. Have you been to Susan Barlow's web site? Its the Barlow Clearinghouse and holds a wealth of information on alot of us Barlow's. If you need the URL please let me know. Debbie But the Barlow I am working on is Emmie Barlow-McPike, b. abt 1875 and lived in Jackson and Lawrence Counties in AR, for sometime! She married (Washy) McPike. no dates on him other than he was born before 1894, when their first born arrived. Does any of this sound familiar to your Barlows? Thanks for you time!!! Sincerely, Tina Romans-Bode

    3. The LDS does have some Monroe County marriage records already. They had a copy of my Thomas Daniel and Christiana Stabler on file, I have ordered from my local LDS office 3 films, that have information about my Monroe Cty Harris & Sizemore's. LDS does have some records. But, no that don't have them all, I don't know that they have ALL the records from any county. Deb Tha was not the statement...I said the LDS was not permitted to photograph the records..id the reason a lot of Monroe Co records are not in their records. Anyone can go and make copies of the records they find..They pay either $1.00 for not cert. or $2.00 for cert. copies. ----- Original Message ----- From: dabf <dabf@zebra.net> To: <ALMONROE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, October 14, 1999 8:38 AM Subject: [ALMONROE-L] Monroe Co. 3. Thank you, Cecile..!!!!! I don't think I should post to the list about theMonroe Co. records anymore.. It has gotten completely out of context.. You must remember I have to do lookups there and they will ban me from the courthouse. LOL...hahaheehee We have a very good record room, lighted well and comfortable and lots of information.. People should go to Bibb county and see their record room.. I suffered through it in March. Ok now don't start on me about Bibb Co.. 3. No one has said anyone had a hard time in the courthouse getting information and letting them copy it.. They are very kind and help if they can and are not busy with their own work, they are not staffed to do long lookups but they will show you were to look and where everything is..I go often.. What the statement was is...... The records were not copied by the LDS for their records because it is not allowed by this courthouse... and in some counties they do and others don't... that is the reason some people don't even know they had family in Monroe county. Fires distroyed the courthouse several times and most records start in 1833, marriages I know for sure. ----- Original Message ----- From: <RothGH@aol.com> To: <ALMONROE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, October 14, 1999 10:10 AM Subject: Re: [ALMONROE-L] Monroe Co. 3. I am Not of that belief . Many people are not and resent the fact they have our info. I think we should have some say so over who has our family records. I think they belong to a research / genealogy lab in a public library or a college in that county. Genealogy societies should have these rather than LDS. It should not be associated with a religion. It just takes the voice of the people for this to happen. Have a great day! 3. The Ala. Archives has a wealth of information on Monroe County! It sounds like the empty shelves mentioned are in the general reference reading room. Cemetery books, general genealogies, etc. are put there and are organized by county for quick location. A useful item at ADHA is the microfilm of the clippings file that the Archive maintained for years. I found newspaper articles and letters from other researchers of the Middleton family in this film. The Alabama Public Library Service maintains Alicat (http://www.apls.state.al.us/) an online catalog of information from a wide variety of Alabama libraries. Use the search feature to search for "Monroe" and you find many, many items. You have to match the library abbreviation to the key to determine the location(s) of the particular items. The ADHA is included in this cooperative and you can identify the items that you want to review prior to going to the Archives. This is an invaluable time saver! Yr. Obt. Svt., D. A. Bass-Frazier

    3. Hello everyone, For what its worth let me put my two cents into this thread. Monroe County, Alabama has a wonderful history. The people of "old Monroe" are some of the nicest folks you will ever met. My family dates back in Monroe County to 1827 or before. I still have alot of family living in Monroe Cty also. Some of the problems in Monroe, are plain simple ones. Money for one The Library is just about empty when it comes to genealogy. The Library itself can not afford to purchase alot of genealogy things either, i.e. census records on microfilm. Monroe County is not a rich county as far as money goes either. Monroe is a farming and pupmill county, work is not easy to come by. But, it can be found. However you can go to the courthouse, search til your hearts content. They are not holding back or hiding records!!! They may very well have told the LDS that they could not photocopy the records I don't know I was not there. I have heard of other counties not allowing the LDS to come in and copy records, it happens often. If you have a date or a near date of a marriage you can write to the courthouse and THEY WILL do a search of the record for you and send you a photocopy of the marriage record. for ONE WHOLE DOLLAR. Above all, and those of us on the list that know Monroe County and its people will agree. Monroe County folks are not really all that open to outside folks stirring up trouble. The people in power in the county, have been in power forever, their kin folks were in power before them. Alot is held in a NAME, in the county. One of the first questions folks are asked is who are your people? This is an old county, the people in the county are proud but no one is going to "MAKE" them changes their minds on the way things are done in the county. What we all need to do, is help each other! When researching Monroe Cty, if we can make copies of things of all the families and post them to the list, or send to the archives, or place them on the Monroe Cty web page. Like Deanie has done with the census record. We just need to work together when it comes to researching Monroe County. Sorry for my 2 cents, I will be going to my room now for punishment Debbie Monroe County Surnames I am working on - DANIEL/DANIELS- HARRIS - BARLOW - HOWELL - TURBERVILLE - BOHANNON - GRIFFIN - STABLER - MCKINLEY - HAYLES - MCDONALD - and related lines
