If American Indians are considered "nonwhite" a whole bunch of my grand parents had to bend the truth to get a license. I'm not trying to put anybody down but the "Indian blood" we are proud of in the year 2000 would have been denied in 1900. I'm proud to be part Choctaw on both sides of my family but I don't think my grandparents felt that way. Grant Johnston
There were probably more but others didn't want to be known as Indian for they would be made to leave their land. I'm seeking information Henry Rikard, son of Lawrence Rikard. This family is from Monroe Co., I've found family papers that state is was Peterman, AL. I've recently found a picture of a house that is marked as Granpa Rikard's home. Anyone have any information they could enlighten me with. I've got the census references, and spouse's names, I've even go Henry's marriage date, but no hard copy of it yet. It's strange to me, I've grown up going to Peterman all my life. If only I'd known, I could have paid more attention.... Thanks Rhonda Bailey Stanton We all have the talent to SMILE... so exercise it! Does anyone know if in fact there was a special 1900 Indian census and a 1910 Indian population census of Monroe county alabama? I have the 1910......sure hate to be paying for same thing.......:( pat
I am sorry, I was looking for the 1910 Monroe co. census, I am looking for any JOINER OR JOYNER . Any help would be great. thank you Janet *** JANET****
Pat, not too sure if there was one for 1900. If there is one, don't think it will be the same information I just happened on the indian census many years ago while at the Washington Public Library, in Macon, Ga. it was at the end of one of the microfilm reels. I went to look for it a couple of years ago and i couldn't find it. I sorta wonder why they took time to issue a special indian census for Monroe Co. and not for the rest of the state. surely there were more in other counties i was once told there was less than 200 indians in the state of ala. after the "Trail of Tears". millard >From: "Pat Opachick" <pensacola@mindspring.com> >Reply-To: ALMONROE-L@rootsweb.com >To: ALMONROE-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: [ALMONROE-L] 1900 special census >Date: Tue, 28 Mar 2000 22:18:03 -0500 > >Does anyone know if in fact there was a special 1900 Indian census and a >1910 Indian population census of Monroe county alabama? A print of ??? a photo, census, whatever??? Your subject line says CENSUS but not any year. Most census are micro filmed and you can get them at a LDS (Mormon) Family History Center. Some have been transcribed verbatim while others have been transcribed and indexed. You can probably find the 1850 census online at the Monroe Co. GenWeb site. Grant
You are right. I have also seen Louisiana as a feminine first name. -----Original Message----- From: GWJCAL@aol.com [mailto:GWJCAL@aol.com] Sent: Tuesday, March 28, 2000 4:04 PM To: ALMONROE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ALMONROE-L] Powells In a message dated 3/28/00 12:18:01 PM Pacific Standard Time, cecile.ellison@hickham.com writes: << Hardy Powell married Missouri Ballard late 1800's ??? >> MISSOURI and LOUISIANA show up as feminine names in several families about then. This is not the same person, but I recall seeing the name on one of the census records and thinking it a real concidence. Missouri is such a different name. Now, a relative may have given her name to their child somewhere down the road. Thanks for the info though. -----Original Message----- From: Cynthia Fore Miller [mailto:hedges01@sprynet.com] Sent: Tuesday, March 28, 2000 2:55 PM To: ALMONROE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ALMONROE-L] Powells Cecile, There is a Missouri Powell, wife of W.M. Am posting my census for M CRAWFORD in AL, 1840, Monroe Co. If someone recognizes their relations, would love to hear from you. "M. CRAWFORD", Monroe Co, AL, shows 1 male, 2 females under 5 1 male, 2 females (10-15) 1 female (30-30) 1 male (30-40), (?1 female, 70-30--can't tell if it's a shadow or mark) Some of the neighbors listed on same sheet were FINKLEA, THOMPSON, BROWNs, and JONES. Sometimes there is a State or County census which shows the names of the families. Would appreciate your help in this area. Also welcome help from anyone with info on this family. One of these days...... WinkieFL@aol.com
