Lynn, I hope you get a more definitive answer than I can give you, however, birth and death records are available from the Vital Records Division of the County Health Dept. Unfortunately, I don't know the name of the street. The entrance is on the east side and in back of the old City Hospital which is located near Broad Street and St. Joseph. The entrance and waiting room also serves those who are visiting the Co. Health Dept. medical clinic so it's a little confusing. I think they close at 4:00 pm. Marriage licenses prior to 1936 are in the county probate court office. After 1936 they are available from the Health Dept like the birth and death records. Cost of birth, death, marriage and divorce is $12.00 for the record search which includes the cost of one certified copy. Each additional copy is $4.00. I got a terrible run-around looking for my grandmother's divorce papers and didn't get them till after I returned home and got on the telephone. I located them in the Mobile Archives office which seems to be in the basement of the old Providence Hospital. (I never went there while I was in Mobile because no one could tell me where it was including the telephone operators.) Incidentally, I think all the birth, death, etc. are actually housed in Montgomery at the Public Health Dept. When you fill out the form in Mobile and pay the money, you sit and wait until the computers respond and give up the record, then you are called to the window to pick up your copies. I couldn't get a copy of my grandmother's death certif. in Mobile because she hadn't been dead for 25 years and I was not the next of kin (since my father is still living). Ultimately I found it a whole lot easier to order direct from the Public Health Dept. in Montgomery. Hope you have good luck.
