The Delchamps family has been in the Mobile area since early 1800's. They owned most of the land on Mon Luis Island, founded the town of Delchamps, AL, and founded the Delchamps Grocery Store chain. The patriarch, Joseph A. Delchamps emigrated to Savannah, GA with his wife, Jeanne Marie F. Durand, in the early 1800's. Their son John Julius Delchamps was born on 21 Sep, 1821, in Savannah, GA and married Sarah Elizabeth Bancroft on 21 Nov. 1844 in Mobile.
