This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: NEWBURY, VAUGHN, WARD Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/TS.2ADE/1801.1.1.1 Message Board Post: I have a webpage you will probably want to review: http://indixie.com/genealogy/newberry/datafile/newberrys_of_wilcox_county_alabama.htm The information about the marriage came to be via email of 3 Apr 2002 from Bonnie Mitchell of Wilcox County, Alabama who helped me with a lot of my information for the NEWBURY family of Wilcox County, Alabama. Bonnie sent the following: "James F. Newbury, 2nd child of Peter & Sarah, was born April 1, 1838 in Oak Hill, AL and died Nov. 19, 1912 in Falls County, Texas. He was married in Mobile, Al on April 11, 1858 to Margaret J. Vaughan (she was born March 30, 1838 in Wilcox County, AL and died Jan. 28, 1908 in Falls County, TX) at the home of Beckham Vaughan by A.C. Ramsey, M.G. children: James F. Newbury, Jr. (born Nov. 20, 1859 in Mobile, AL; died Nov. 30, 1859 in Mobile, AL) Emma W. Newbury, born abt. 1862 Clara Cole Newbury, born August 29, 1865 Vaughan W. Newbury Percy Newbury". The tombstone transcription for Margaret J. VAUGHN Newbury says she was born 30 Mar 1839 rather than 30 Mar 1838. Bonnie's information has been excellent and I suspect the tombstone may have been misread. James and Margaret named their first child, Emma! I don't have any census information for the household of Beckham VAUGHAN/VAUGHN. Did the 1850 census show a daughter born about 1838 or 1839? I have seen some possible name variants for Margaret VAUGHN, including Margaret J. VAUGHN and Margaret E. J. VAUGHN. The "E" may be Emma or Elizabeth and the "J" is probably Jane. My best guess as to where Beckham might have been in 1870 is based soley on where these NEWBURY familes had been in about this era and that would be Alabama, Mississippi, or Texas and possibly Florida, since it is so close to Mobile. My web page mentioned above will provide information on where James and Margaret Newbury died and where they are buried. I have not found the burials for Beckham or Harriett. Bonnie's information indicated that Margaret was born in Wilcox County, Alabama in 1838, but from what I can tell, it looks like Beckham was in Lowndes County, Alabama in about 1838. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Will/Estate Records, Abbeville, SC, from the book, "Abstracts of Old Ninety-Six and Abbeville District, SC Wills and Bonds" by P.
