This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Spencer, Mangham, Kirby Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/TS.2ADE/1886 Message Board Post: I am searching for any information on this family. J James A. Mangham, born 1830 in Georgia, resided for a time in Chambers County and moved to Mobile Alabama in the 1850's. In 1859 he married Virginia Victoria Spencer in the Government Street church. James A. Mangham was a sawyer and lumber merchant. Dana Mangham seems to believe he served in the Civil War, based on correspondence and other records he has seen, but has not been able to locate records. The ages of his children seem to support this, as there were no children born during that period. The couple lived on the north side of government street, second west of Hallett. James A. Mangham is buried in the Spencer plot (unmarked grave) along with some Kirby relations at Magnolia cemetery. Why he never had a headstone, seems odd to me. Edwin Spencer was Virginia Victoria Spencer>Mangham's father. Edwin married a wealthy widow, Adaline (N). She appears with her children in the 1870 Census along with Virginia (sans James A.). I have no record of Edwin or Adaline's death. 1870 Federal Census, Mobile Alabama Spencer, Adaline 59, born Virginia Spencer, Frank E. 32, real estate agent, born Mississippi Spencer, Thomas A., 36, Civil Engeineer, born Mississippi Spencer, Charles E., clerk, born Alabama Spencer, Sidney (male), at school, born Alabama Spencer, Louisa, 22 born Louisianna, at home Spencer, Mollie 3, born Alabama Spencer Thomas 1 born Alabama Mangham, Virginia at home, born Mississippi Mangham, Frank, 3, born Alabama Mangham, Clarence, 1, born Alabama Virginia Victoria Spencer>Mangham moved to San Antonio and was later buried there. Presumably she moved there to be near her son, James Clarence Mangham, who was the general director of the SAAP (San Antonio-Aranses Pass) Railroad and one of the founders of the San Antonio Country Club. Her grandson was a well know pro at the San Antonio County Club, Clarence Edward Mangham. Any information would be helpful...
