Recently I announced my new website called The POORHOUSE STORY at http://www.poorhousestory.com It is a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses. I need a little help. First...duh...is the city of Mobile in Mobile County? Then.... Can someone verify for me whether the Providence Infirmary in Mobile ALABAMA was first a poorhouse? Any information about this building (and its function) will be appreciated. A picture postcard of this place is being advertised on eBay at http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=387805637 I have adopted the practice (which may send me to a poorhouse!) of trying to purchase poorhouse memorabilia (especially photographs)in order to preserve it for the historical record. If none of you want to buy it and copy it for submission to The POORHOUSE STORY website <hint, hint>...please help me verify that it was, indeed, a poorhouse (or NOT) and that will help me decide whether to buy it myself to post and share with you.
