Last week while I was doing this, a light flashed and I realized that the Vaughn P NEWBURY and H. A. NEWBURY were erroneously transcribed in that 1880 census and were actually Beckham VAUGHN and Hatte Ann WARD. Geez, I have spent hours trying to find out who Vaughn P. NEWBURY was! I even thought the "P" might stand for Percy, since a descendant in this line was named Percy NEWBURY. I ran across your post on the Mobile Board Sunday, when I decided to find out more about Beckham and Hattie Ann. As I add my genealogies to my FTM-2005 file, I am also adding a little to what I have on my webpages and making some corrections and changes. Hopefully I will correct a greater number of things than the errors/typos I create by doing this! Anyway, Since it might effect your current research, I think you should know that the Thomas Cogborn HAGENS, as currently shown on my webpage and who is a descendant of Maggie VAUGHN/VAUGHAN Newbury, was actually born in 1855 and not 1869. There is at least one Falls County, Texas file that appears to show him born 31 Jan 1869, but I recently found that he is enumerated in the 1880 census at age 24 and in the household of a brother: 1880 Census Place E.D. 39, Falls, Texas Family History Library Film 1255302 / NA Film Number T9-1302 / Page Number 209C Mason M. The online files that show Thomas HAGENS as born in 1869, also shows his middle name as Cogborn, while the files I have located that show him born in 1855 have his middle name as Cogsdell or Cogdell. In all instances that I have found, Thomas C. HAGENS' father is shown as William Beauregard HAGENS and he has a brother named Mason born in 1853. In my FTM file I now have him as Thomas Cogsdell HAGENS born 1855 Upshur County, Texas; died 7 Apr 1923 Anson, Jones County, Texas and with a note about the name variants. All for now, Steve

I had wondered about Margaret's actual parentage. It is also interesting to note that HOLLOWAY's were in Peter's 1850 household and that a Margaret HOLLOWAY was a witness in the 7 May 1838 Abbeville District, S.C. Will of Samuel PERRYMAN, which also stated that Beckham VAUGHAN was taking care of his affairs in Lowndes County, Alabama. I don't know why Margaret was in Peter's 1850 household, but it looks like she and James must have been childhood sweethearts!

Without your help, I would never have located all this information. Thanks so much for taking the time to answer. I have searched the censuses available to me in 1870, and cannot locate the Vaughns. Perhaps they were missed that year. In 1850, Beckham Vaughn's household only consisted of him (listed as "B. Vaughn"), his wife (listed as "Mrs. Vaughn), and one daughter Emma. The age of Hattie Ann Ward Vaughn in 1850 was incorrect - given as the same as Beckham's age. The enumeration gives the appearance of a hurried one, and so I assume that Maggie was merely omitted. The 1840 census in Lowndes County indicates two young daughters in Beckham's household, presumably Emma and Maggie. Best wishes, Tim Hudson

Bonnie sent the following: "James F. Newbury, 2nd child of Peter & Sarah, was born April 1, 1838 in Oak Hill, AL and died Nov. 19, 1912 in Falls County, Texas. He was married in Mobile, Al on April 11, 1858 to Margaret J. Vaughan (she was born March 30, 1838 in Wilcox County, AL and died Jan. 28, 1908 in Falls County, TX) at the home of Beckham Vaughan by A.C. Ramsey, M.G. children: James F. Newbury, Jr. (born Nov. 20, 1859 in Mobile, AL; died Nov. 30, 1859 in Mobile, AL) Emma W. Newbury, born abt. 1862 Clara Cole Newbury, born August 29, 1865 Vaughan W. Newbury Percy Newbury". The tombstone transcription for Margaret J. VAUGHN Newbury says she was born 30 Mar 1839 rather than 30 Mar 1838. Bonnie's information has been excellent and I suspect the tombstone may have been misread. James and Margaret named their first child, Emma! I don't have any census information for the household of Beckham VAUGHAN/VAUGHN. Did the 1850 census show a daughter born about 1838 or 1839? I have seen some possible name variants for Margaret VAUGHN, including Margaret J. VAUGHN and Margaret E. J. VAUGHN. The "E" may be Emma or Elizabeth and the "J" is probably Jane. My best guess as to where Beckham might have been in 1870 is based soley on where these NEWBURY familes had been in about this era and that would be Alabama, Mississippi, or Texas and possibly Florida, since it is so close to Mobile. My web page mentioned above will provide information on where James and Margaret Newbury died and where they are buried. I have not found the burials for Beckham or Harriett. Bonnie's information indicated that Margaret was born in Wilcox County, Alabama in 1838, but from what I can tell, it looks like Beckham was in Lowndes County, Alabama in about 1838. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Will/Estate Records, Abbeville, SC, from the book, "Abstracts of Old Ninety-Six and Abbeville District, SC Wills and Bonds" by P.
