Does anyone on this list have any information about the parents or siblings of Bartholomew S. Skates (or Skaats)? He owned the B. S. Skates & Co. foundry (AKA Mobile Foundry) on State St., according to Mobile city directories between 1844 and 1859. The 1870 census shows he was employed as a machinist by the M. & O. railroad. I would also like to know whether any personnel listings of this railroad still exist. Thanks, Dave
I am seeking information about the family and descendants of Gladys Evans Mock, (1903-?), who was married to Willie Gayus Mock. I know that she resided in Mobile, AL for at least the years of 1937 to 1970. Can anyone help me out? Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I might track down some more information about Gladys and her descendants? Marianne Ryan.
Does anybody have any information regarding ships or passenger lists from either of these locations? Thanks, Ginny
MOBILE GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY PRESENTS ALL-DAY SEMINAR FOR 37TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION -- FEBRUARY 13, 1999 To celebrate its 37th Anniversary, the Mobile Genealogical Society will present the Heritage Quest Road Show on Saturday, February 13, 1999. This event will take place at the society's headquarters -- the old St. Joan of Arc School located at the corner of Elmira Street and South Ann Street in Mobile, Alabama. If you have Internet access, an interactive map to this location can be found at http://www.siteone.com/clubs/mgs/map.htm Leland K. Meitzler, professional genealogist, founder and executive editor of Heritage Quest Magazine will be the presenter. Mr. Meitzler will speak on three topics during the day-long event. Locating Your Ancestors Family When All You Know Is The State! covers a broad variety of statewide, as well as, nationwide indexes that will allow one to locate a family. Also discussed under this topic is how to locate someone with an extremely common name. The second topic, Your Ancestor Was Not Destroyed In The Courthouse Fire! deals with substituting records to take the place of documents destroyed in fires, floods, etc. The third topic, Advanced Use of State & Federal Census Records includes the historical aspects of the various censuses that directly affect the researcher. Discussed will be a wide variety of census information, census copies, indexes, special schedules and where to locate the information. The day will conclude with a question-and-answer session. The Road Show will also include an opportunity for shopping! On hand will be a display of hundreds of titles of books (including genealogical guidebooks), computer programs (including virtually all the CD-ROMs currently available to genealogists), as well as, miscellaneous genealogical supplies (forms, charts, etc.). Also available will be a large selection of historic maps of the various United States and European countries. This huge display will allow genealogists to see the product before they buy. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. and the seminar begins at 9:00 a.m. Lunch will be an on-site potluck covered-dish affair. The fee is $35 per person for MGS members, $40 for non-members, and $15 for each additional immediate family member (residing at the same address!) attending. This fee pays for the seminar AND a years subscription to the bimonthly Heritage Quest Magazine (6 issues - a $28 value by itself). Each family will also receive 3 queries in the magazine. The total value of the package is over $60.00. Many door prizes will be given away during the program. To register by mail, send your check to Mobile Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 6224, Mobile, AL 36660-6224. Be sure to include the name, address, phone number and email address of each person attending plus up to 10 surnames that you are researching. Registrations that are received by February 6th will have their names and surnames included in the program booklet. If you have questions, you can contact Jackie Hines by phone at (334) 653-8305 or by email at <[email protected]>. Looking for information on Alice A. Gear who was born in Mobile County on April 28, 1851. Does anyone have any resources they would be willing to check for a Gear family in Mobile during this period of time? Thank you, Ginny Walker English . 1 ALICE A.1 GEAR was born April 28, 1851 in Mobile County, Alabama, and died March 19, 1935 in Laurel, Jones County, Mississippi. She married JOSEPH ALLEN HURST December 28, 1880, son of William Hurst and Mary Steinwinder.
Jan Garland indicated some interest in Mobile about the time her STOCKING ancestors lived there in the 1830s. I have found the city directories to be a fascinating reference. Some libraries have them on microfiche. In addition to listing heads of households with their occupations, many editions have writeups of different topics. Some even have early advertisements. Altogether, they show that Mobile was a pretty sophisticated place - perhaps more than most towns its size in that era. It's well worth the time spent for a better understanding of ordinary life there. Dave
Hi Looking for info on Jonathan Stocking, b. 1797 in NY, who was mayor of Mobile in the 1830's, and died in 1835. I have all his family in NY and CT going back to England, but would like to find some info on what was happening in Mobile at the time he and his family were living there, politics etc., and how he died. Also--and especially--looking for info on Keziah Elizabeth Beard, his wife, b. 1805, and her parents. She was supposedly b. in "Macon" (no state given). She and Jonathan were married in 1823 in Blakeley, Baldwin Co., AL and then moved, before 1830, to Mobile. I have no info on her parents, but her father's name may have been Henry. This is a major brick wall for me. Thanks for any and all info. Jan Garland Oceanside CA
I'm looking for any relation to Alice A. Gear who was born 28 April 1851 in Mobile, Mobile Co., AL Been looking for this Gear family for a long time and just got an email saying that their "source" thought she was born in Mobile. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Ginny Walker English

I am looking for information on James Burns and the Halligan family. James was born in the early 1800's in Ireland. I believe he came to Mobile around 1836. He married Mary (who was from England) around 1838. James and Mary had six children: John, Robert, Alice, Mary, Catherine Ann, and James, Jr. Alice Burns married my great grandfather, John Patrick Halligan (b. in Ireland in 1833) in 1865. They had five children (Edmund Byrne, Robert Lee, Maggie, Josephine, and Albert Sidney). Edmund died as an infant. John Patrick designed and built the torpedo boat, the "St. Patrick" during the Civil War. In the early 1880's, things got tough for the Halligan family, and John Patrick left his family to go to New Orleans to find work. He died there in 1881 at the age of 48. Two years later, his wife, Alice died, leaving their four children orphaned. I believe that Maggie and Josephine were sent back to Ireland, and Robert and Albert were taken in by the Burns family. Several years later, Robert died, leaving Albert Sidney the only Halligan (that I know of) left. I am looking for any related Burns descendant that might be able to fill in the missing pieces on the Halligan and Burns families. Thanks, Mary in Houston, TX

It is believed that Elizabeth is buried in Mobile Co., But I dont know where, since I am in Texas and cant search through your libraries. Thanks David
Can anyone help me out on this? I am trying to find out where I can obtain a copy of the obituary for Michael McKinsey listed in the Mobile Genealogical Society's publication of "Death Notices 1820 - 1829" as follows: 1822/02/10 McKinsey, Michael Contr. by Lois Dumas Mitchell 1822/02/11 M'Kenzie, Michael Mobile Commercial Register Pg 3 Col 4 I believe his widow was Mary Emeline (Emelite?) who married second, Christopher Yates Fonda. Michael is believed to be the father of my g-g-grandmother Caroline McKinsey Wood. He was a Notary of Public and was in trouble with the authorities concerning his handling of guardianship trusts when he suddenly died. Needless to say, I am quite curious about the particulars of his demise! Caroline had at least one sister, Adella who married Hezekiah Gates. Another possible sister would be Adeline who married Thomas Pierce. Caroline married George Wood who was in the wholesale grocery business in Mobile. He sent his family to live with relatives in NY, sailing around the Horn to SF in 1850 where he began his business ventures anew in Chico CA. The family joined him in CA about 1860. Family tradition says that Caroline spoke fluent French, so I am guessing that her mother was French as her father was Irish and served with Gen. Anthony Wayne.
