Hi, This is in response to Shirley's question about Shortleaf and Yellow Pine, AL. I'm also new to the list and a novice genealogist. I thought I'd pass along this information. I'm not familiar with Shortleaf and couldn't find it on a map. Yellow Pine, AL, is located in Washington County which borders Mobile County to the North. Yellow Pine is almost on the Alabama-Mississippi line. The county seat is Chatom and I believe that is where you would write for vital records. I hope this helps. I'm including a site which shows a map of this county. <www.asc.edu/archives/maps/washimap.html > Best regards, Kim Taylor [email protected]
I am fairly new to research and new to your list. I am wondering if someone that is looking up death records would mind looking for my Aunt Death record. MARY ISABEL MONROE - Died age 15 - on September 14, 1912 (that could be 1911). Buried near Shortleaf, Ala. I have a postcard addressed to her at Yellow Pin, Ala. Would it be hard to find the cemetery that she is buried in? Could someone tell me about the area. How far from Mobile would Shortleaf and Yellow Pine be? I find it helps to get a picture of the place I am looking for. Also where would I send for a death certificate. I would appreciate any help that I can get. My grandfather was a minister at the time. Thanks, Shirley, B.C. CANADA
Hello everyone, I've started a new website at vidas.rootsweb.com/sherry.html. It will be mainly on Alabama families, (Mobile, Washington, Baldwin, Monroe, Conecuh and Clarke Counties), as this is where most of my roots can be traced. Please check it out and send comments and suggestions to me. Just remember I'm a rookie, so don't expect a masterpiece (yet), and as always it's under construction! Thanks Sherry
Where is the Wakefield community located in Washington County? Does anyone know. Thanks Dot. GOD BLESS & GODSPEED
Lynn, I hope you get a more definitive answer than I can give you, however, birth and death records are available from the Vital Records Division of the County Health Dept. Unfortunately, I don't know the name of the street. The entrance is on the east side and in back of the old City Hospital which is located near Broad Street and St. Joseph. The entrance and waiting room also serves those who are visiting the Co. Health Dept. medical clinic so it's a little confusing. I think they close at 4:00 pm. Marriage licenses prior to 1936 are in the county probate court office. After 1936 they are available from the Health Dept like the birth and death records. Cost of birth, death, marriage and divorce is $12.00 for the record search which includes the cost of one certified copy. Each additional copy is $4.00. I got a terrible run-around looking for my grandmother's divorce papers and didn't get them till after I returned home and got on the telephone. I located them in the Mobile Archives office which seems to be in the basement of the old Providence Hospital. (I never went there while I was in Mobile because no one could tell me where it was including the telephone operators.) Incidentally, I think all the birth, death, etc. are actually housed in Montgomery at the Public Health Dept. When you fill out the form in Mobile and pay the money, you sit and wait until the computers respond and give up the record, then you are called to the window to pick up your copies. I couldn't get a copy of my grandmother's death certif. in Mobile because she hadn't been dead for 25 years and I was not the next of kin (since my father is still living). Ultimately I found it a whole lot easier to order direct from the Public Health Dept. in Montgomery. Hope you have good luck. What the Probate Court of Mobile County has is an alphabetical index cross-referenced for both the groom and bride. Each marriage would show up once under the name of the groom and again under the name of the bride. You can order a copy of the license from the Probate Court. I *THINK* the cost is $1.00, but you should check that out first. Here's their contact info which was copy-and-pasted from the web site of the Mobile Genealogical Society. All records -- birth, marriage, death, divorce -- are $12.00 each. Additional copies of the SAME record purchased at the SAME time are $4.00 each. Payment accepted is cash or personal check. The following text is from http://vitalrec.com/alcounties.html... All Alabama vital records are available from the state office and through a statewide computer system that became fully operational in all 67 counties in June 1996. Within the state, authorized applicants can walk into any county health department and get any Alabama vital record, regardless of where the event occurred, while they wait, usually within 15 to 30 minutes. Since county offices are not prepared to handle mail, customers outside Alabama should not write or call any county health department office. Instead, all calls and mail should be directed to the state office. I verified this information on the phone with someone at the Mobile County Health Dept just before sending this email. Hope this helps. -- Regards, Kevin Sellew in Mobile, Alabama *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* President of the Mobile (Alabama) Genealogical Society -- a non-profit 501(c)(3) educational organization and WebMaster for the Mobile Genealogical Society Web Site On the Web: http://www.siteone.com/clubs/mgs/ *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Looking for anyone who is searching DEARMAN's. If you have a Betty Jane Dearman,Dollie,Lulu or Clara please let me know. Kay Hopkins Dayton,Tx
Most of the Birth and death records are kept at the Mobile County Health Dept @251 North Bayou St in Mobile. The Mobile Genealogy Center across the street from the Mobile Public Library has indexes for Marraiges in Mobile Co, I am not sure what years are available (mine ancestor was 1841). I looked my up by groom. In reply to LSIZEDALE question Mobile County Health Department 251 N Bayou P O Box 2867 Mobile, AL 36652 (334) 690-8150
The 1954 Mobile City directory shows that Wm. G. and Gladys lived at 187 Louiselle St. and that he was a salesman at Mobile Sls. Does anyone know what "Mobile Sls." stands for? Would appreciate help. Marianne.
Lynn in SC, According to the information I obtained at the Birmingham Public Library, the Mobile County Probate Court has land records, naturalization records, wills, and marriage licenses records, BUT NO birth or death records. My information does not give a street address but does include a phone number. I suggest you call them at (334) 690-8508. If you do go down there I would like to know if they have a "brides and/or grooms" index. I have been trying to uncover the marriage date of Gladys Evans and Willie (William) Gayus Mock. Thanks, Marianne. On Tue, 26 Jan 1999 19:26:25 EST [email protected] writes: > >Can someone tell me the street address for the Vital Statistics >Office in >Mobile? Would like to correspond with anyone who may be connected with the DEARMAN's of Mobile Co. or Montgomery Co. Alabama & Jackson Co. Mississippi. They moved around a lot but stayed somewhere between Ala,Miss, Georgia, and Louisiana. I am interested in the entire family but the one name that I need most is John Henry Dearman (Henry John Dearman) called Shorty. He was said to have killed a man for being in his fishing spot near or under a bridge in Alabama- in the 50's. Can anyone tell me more about this person, his wife's name, children or what really happened at the fishing spot? Kay Hopkins Dayton,Texas
I applied for a birth certificate in Ala.- by mail Can any one tell me about how long it will take to get a reply, and what may be on it. froggie Dayton,Tx
Hi to all. Just wanted to let you all know I have added many more marriages to the Marriage pages on Mobile Co., ALGenWeb at http://www.rootsweb.com/~almobile/ These are marriages I have been picking up everywhere possible from many sources. If you have any marriages that are not found on those pages, please send them to me and I will add them with your email addresses as contact. (Will also add them to the Marriages of Alabama Index). Further, Lygia Cutts, the energetic ALGenWeb Archives coordinator, announced additions for Mobile Co. -- cemetery data-- Magnolia Cemetery, Palestine Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Allentown Cemetery, Wilmer Cemetery. These items can be found at http://www.rootsweb.com/~algwarch/mobile.htm If you have any records that might be added to the ALGenWeb Archives site, or Mobile Co., ALGenWeb, please consider contributing them. Carol Middleton
Ola Mae ( Barry) Dearman died in Mobile from cancer.about the fifties I am not able to find anything on her. She was said to have been Indian. My mom was born there 5-31-1931 and am unable to find anything on her. I do know mom was married to a Jennings in Mobile.and may have had a son there by the name of Billy Dewayne Jennings. Can someone tell me the street address for the Vital Statistics Office in Mobile? I will be going to Mobile on Friday, but won't arrive until around 2 or 3 pm. So if some kind person could give me the street address, I would greatly appreciate it. Does anyone know what they charge for Death Certificates? Thank you, Lynn in SC
I see from the current messages that Mobile AL. had city directories in the 1800's. My great grandfather Patrick Hart settled in Mobile around 1860. and I believe his 4 children (Including my grandfather- Thomas M Hart) were born in Mobile between 1865 and 1872. We don't know our great grandmothers given or maiden names Does anyone have access to these old directories and be willing to look Patrick Hart up for me? Possibly the war interrupted the publication but I would be most appreciative of any help Thank you, Frank A Hart
Does anyone know if there is any way to obtain "long distance" access to the county marriage records? Does Mobile County have a "brides index" and a "grooms index" as they do in Jefferson County? Is there any way to request a search if the year of the marriage is unknown? Thank you, Marianne Ryan.
According to the old Mobile City directories, there was a Methodist Church in Toulminville in the 1850s. Does this church still exist? Does anyone know if it still has membership records going back that far? My Whitaker family apparently moved there from another residence in Mobile in the late 1850s. Thanks, Dave
