I am searching fro information on Eli MOFFETT who lived in Mobile ca 1830.
COLONIAL MOBILE, Peter Hamilton (Houghton & Mifflin, 1897): page 319 "on the Tensaw were many residents at first, although sme moved to the ombigbee. McCurtin land in 1787 obtained the Farmer place, but in 1790 described it as inhabitable and moved up to St. Stephens. This Farmer place of 12, 800 arpens became, under McCurtain's will, the property of his widow, and she in 1810, as Mme. Diego McVoy, sold it for $650 to Joshua Kennedy, including Rains' Creek and Farmer's Bluff." page 221 as regards to the population of Mobile under Spain remaining primarily French "We see the same thing all around the bay, although the first two tracts south of the city are Spanish. These are the Eslava Bay TRact, adjoining the Mandeville, and that of Cornelius McCurtain (afterwards Diego McVoy) still further south, taking up much of the long peninsula between main Dog River and the bay." page 392 " After the declaration of peace the people, in March 1815, held their second municipal election. Judson (who was the new town president), Hobart, Powell, and Robeshaw were reelcted commissioners, and the others were succeeded by William Chenault, Diego McVoy, and Michael Perault. Our first board turned over to them a net balance in the treasury of $60.85 1/2 to begin on." page 423 under Spanish City Grants: "6. On August 13, 1806, William McVoy obtained from Intendant-General Morales an order of survey of twenty arpens adjoining Fort Charlotee. He soon sold to Joshua Kennedy, and the tract was cultivated and inhabited by him and a Spaniard in his employ from 1807 to 1820.The use was not such as to conform to the conditions of the sale, and the grant hung fire in American times tioll confirmed by a special act of Congress May 5, 1832. This McVoy tract was shaped like a T, the cross being along our St. Emanuel and Conception, from the Collel line to Governmnet, the upright wedging in between DFoty Charlotte and Eslava down to the river. A grant of land so close to the fort as this would naturally be subject to suspicion, especially as, so late as November 22, 1806, the validity of sale of lots near the forts was considered unsettled." Sorry could find no listing for Indera. or Miller
NEED INFO on my 4th great grandmother of MOBILE,ALABAMA circa 1740-1760birth. Her name was YSABELLA MELSA INDESA or ISABELLA MELSA INDESA or 'AMERICANIZED' to 'ELIZABETH MILLER.' She was the wife of JOHN MCVOY FROM IRELAND and the mother of DIEGO MCVOY,SR of MOBILE and WILLIAM MCVOY SR. who had lived in SAVANNAH and PENSACOLA and MOBILE. --and possibly also of JOSEPH MCVOY, SR. of LEXINGTON DISTRICT SC in the same time frame who moved to MS and later to FRANKLIN PARISH,LA. I assume she came from SPAIN, possibly CATALONIA??. On other websites, I've seen her listed as ELIZABETH MILLER, but I got this info from my grandpa MCVOY'S sister's family --who took it from the MCVOY FAMILY BIBLE and had other official family records to verify this information. ISABELLA and JOHN MCVOY, were indeed the parents of BOTH: DIEGO MCVOY,SR and WILLIAM MCVOY,SR(PENSACOLA!) WE FINALLY KNOW THAT YES!!! THEY WERE BROTHERS! BONNIE MCVOY TREON [email protected]

HELLO AGAIN! I have seen info written on 3 other websites that DIEGO MCVOY was the MAYOR of MOBILE in 1815. CAN ANYONE VERIFY THIS FOR ME? ALSO, if he was indeed the mayor, why then is his name horribly 'misspelled' on just about every census record and document he appears on? You would think that if he was indeed the mayor, that the records folks would at least be able to spell his name. HE WAS NOT A MCVEY! HE WAS NOT A MCVAY! HIS NAME WAS MCVOY! all though -- I believe somewhere down the line in IRELAND or SCOTLAND --we are all somehow related.(my theory.) Need info on WHERE in IRELAND and WHEN did JOHN/JUAN MCVOY come to WEST FLORIDA. He may have come through SAVANNAH,CHARLESTON,PENSACOLA,MOBILE or NEW ORLEANS in the mid 1700's. Any help is GREATLY appreciated. WARM REGARDS, BONNIE [email protected]

Does anyone know where these records are? I'm looking for old funeral home records from Mobile, Mobile County, Alabama. The name of the funeral directors were Berojon[sp?] and Sands in Mobile, Alabama during 1900s era. Is it now Roche-Belmany? I'm trying to prove that death cert has wrong location written on it. The cemetery has no listing on file and no headstone on cemetery grounds. His wife death cert said the same thing but later it was crossed out and listed as Catholic Cemetery. Would like to view these old funeral home records but no one seems to know where they went or where they are stored. I know they can't just throw them away..Can someone PLEASE HELP me. Denny

Hello MOBILE researchers!*************************************************** Does anyone out there have information on MARGARET BYRNE who married WILLIAM MCVOY,SR in PENSACOLA in 1801? They had a daughter ANN in 1803, and son WILLIAM T.MCVOY in 1812. THEY lived in SPANISH WEST FLORIDA TERRITORY between PENSACOLA and MOBILE. I believe they died and were indeed buried in MOBILE. DOES ANYONE OUT THERE know if MARGARET BYRNE (possibly originally from ST AUGUSTINE/b.estimate 1777) was possibly married to a BYRNE before marrying WILLIAM MCVOY and possibly BYRNE was not her birth maiden name??????? The reason I ask is from info I was given: MOBILE COUNTY ABSTRACTS OF DEEDS,WILLS, AND MISC. RECORDS: misc.1819 cattle marks: ...THOMAS BYRNE,GERALD BYRNE,ANN BYRNE,SARAH DUNN, WILLIAM MCVOY,(ISAREL?)KETCHUM I was curious if THOMAS,GERALD,ANN,etc. were MARGARET'S siblings or children-- CAN ANYONE OUT THERE ANSWER THIS FOR ME. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH FOR YOUR KINDNESS. BONNIE MCVOY TREON [email protected]

Hi. Just placed something of interest to you all on the Mobile A:GenWeb site -- a chapter from Peter Hamilton's COLONIAL MOBILE -- "What Bartram saw". Chose to transcribe this rather than straight from Bartarm (still may do that later), because Peter Hamilton puts a Mobilian's slant on the info and that is kind of neat! Anyway it is a physical description of late 18th century Mobile area. It is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~almobile/brtrm1.html#anchor988518 Enjoy!! Carol M.

Chatom is across the state line from Wayne County Mississippi I believe, which is just a few miles from Perry County (the way the county lines are located.) If I'm not mistaken the Mississippi side was all taken from Greene County, Mississippi which was formed from part of Alabama. I'm also new to the list and a novice genealogist. I thought I'd pass along this information. I'm not familiar with Shortleaf and couldn't find it on a map. Yellow Pine, AL, is located in Washington County which borders Mobile County to the North. Yellow Pine is almost on the Alabama-Mississippi line. The county seat is Chatom and I believe that is where you would write for vital records. I hope this helps. I'm including a site which shows a map of this county. <www.asc.edu/archives/maps/washimap.html > Best regards, Kim Taylor [email protected]
Hi everyone, I'm new to this list and trying to trace a lost thread. I only have information that Andrew MacDonald, son of Donald and Margaret MacDonald of Pictou County, Nova Scotia, born in the 1820's, died in Mobile, Alabama. Date is unknown, guessing late 1800's. Can anyone tell me where to begin to look for this particular death, like indexes or? Thanks, Marilyn in Los Angeles
