William Clapp married to Mary "Polly" Cotton Son Barton Stone Clapp was a state legislator until his death in 1862. He is burried in Guntersville, anybody know where? His son Barton S. Clapp (1845-1910) married Emily Jane Hackney and they moved to Arkansas in the 1870's. I am trying to find connections for Mary Cotton and Emily Jane Hackney. The family names are listed as landowners on the BLM site. Cotton may have come from the Huntsville area as did the Clapps before moving to Marshall County. Also I believe that Cottonville was named after the family because The were the original landowners on the town site. Any connections? Rosemarie Langley
Seeking information regarding the parents of Thomas McDuffie Smith. "Tom" was born 11-April-1892 in Morgan Co., Al. and died 13-April-1948 in the veterans hospital in Montgomery. I believe most of his life was spent in Marshall Co. Tom's mother is RosaMay??? according to her tombstone and Rosie Dillis according to Tom's death certificate. His father is W. Gasten, according to his tombstone, he was born 1856, and died 1931. I have been unable to find any information on my Gasten or Rosie. I haven't been able to find death certificates or anything. It is said that Gasten may have been married prior to Rosie and possibly from Randolph Co., Al.

Jacob BEARDEN and Caroline Rachael ? (probably HESS) are in 1850 census of Marshall Co Alabama probably married just prior to the census, but can't find a Marshall Co marriage on them, 1860 census of Jefferson Co Alabama. Jacob is likely the Jacob Bearden of the 49th Alabama and most likely died in the War as Caroline is back in Marshall Co in 1870 and 1880 census without a husband listed. Jacob is probably the Jacob Bearden listed as buried in Maple Hill Cemetery unknown confederate veterans section who died March 26, 1862. There are children who we haven't accounted for One is Jefferson Bearden maybe the Jefferson Bearden who married in Cullman Co and Elizabeth who possibly married a Milligan (according to her brother Jacob Simpson's obit in 1935) but most likely a Millican and possibly resided in Morgan Co and a third named America Bearden (listed in the 1870 and 1880 census, born after Jacob is dead, so don't know if she is Caroline's child or just a relative.) Also was a brother Richard who married a King in Madison Co in 1880 that most likely died as our line Jacob Simpson Bearden married his wife in Arkansas in 1883. Jacob Simpson Bearden was in Oklahoma before statehood and we would like to find the rest of this family. WOULD LOVE TO FIND THE LOST LINES OF THIS FAMILY FROM THE CHILDREN NAMED ABOVE and information linking Jacob to one of the Alabama BEARDEN families and a connection to Caroline's family who was listed on her son's papers as maiden name of Hess! Confusing yes, but that is why I am looking! (SMILE) Johnnie Truelove

I am still trying to find my ggg grandfather. His wife was Elizabeth Julia (Hodge or Hodges) Weston. He was married to her pre 1826. They have three known children together. Moses Riley Weston born in Morgan county, AL in 1826 per his army records. He served in the War with Mexico and died serving in that war. Other children were Nephanny (Nettie, Neffie, Neffa) Weston born in 1828 and married John Butler in Blount county, AL and Jasper Newton Weston born in 1833 in AL and married Elizabeth Lucinda Fortner in Blount county, AL. Jasper Newton Weston listed on a census his father was born in Ohio. It is a rumor in some family stories that my mystery Weston was married before and had sons Bill and Baker Weston who lived up north somewhere. Elizabeth Julia Hodge(s) Weston was rumored to be the daughter of Hugh Hodge of Virginia. She had a daughter pre her marriage to a Weston (no marriage record has been found) named Lydia Hodge. She married Calvin Tidwell who has c! onnections to Blount county, AL Tidwells. Jasper Newton Weston named his first child John Columbus Weston. He college educated all eleven of his children. A family story that has not been proven had this mystery Weston named Jacque Weston. IN newspaper articles Jasper Newton Weston was fondly called "Jop" Weston. Maybe someone down the line got this mixed up. They sound similar. It is assumed he was in North AL in the 1820's. Is anyone researching these names?

Al Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Al/Marshall/10123 Surname: Phillips ------------------------- The Primitive Baptist Churches have a web site at http://www.pb.org/ The site lists links to three churches in Alabama. They are at Cullman, Hamilton and Huntsville (Flint River). One of the present day Elders at these churches should be able to tell you about Elder Phillips. The site also have a correspondence section that might be helpful. Good luck Barbara
Posted on: Marshall Co. Al Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Al/Marshall/10122 Surname: Phillips ------------------------- I am looking for Zillman Phillips, b 1799 in SC. He was a Primative Baptist Minister and last found in Marshall County, 1860 Census. Marriages performed by him in the 1850's are documented in Marshall County. Haven't found him in the limited cemetery listings online. Does anyone have the names of the primitive baptist churches in that area for that time?
Posted on: Marshall Co. Al Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Al/Marshall/10121 Surname: Hinds, Culp ------------------------- My family also was Primitive Baptist. Huldah Byram Hinds, her brother, Ebenezer Byram, and her daughter-in-law, Sophia C. Culp Hinds, wife of Calvin Hinds, were members of the Flint River Primitive Baptist Church in Madison County. This church was the first of what is now a group of churches. The members of these churches must have known each other and corresponded about their families. I am trying to find correspondence from Sophia or a friend or family member telling of the birth of Sophia's first child, Mikral (Michael) Dupree Hinds on 30 Sep 1823. In researching your family lines in Marshall County, please look for a mention of their friends to the north giving news of events within the membership of the Flint River Church. Even if the news does not memtion Sophia or her son, it might give a clue of where to look next! Any little item on the Flint River Church would be appreciated.
If anyone reading this has heard of the Hughes Egg Farm that was or is located somewhere near Marshall County, AL, please contact me. Thanks, Jan

Linda, I have a little info on the Ligon family of Marshall Co. AL as they connect to the Griffin family. Joseph Ligon {8/20/25 - 6/27/65} m. Evaline Griffin {d. March 24 1884 at the age of 53}, dau of William Meredith Griffin and Teresa Caroline Satterwhite. Joseph & Evaline were married in Marshall Co. Oct 20, 1845. They had a daughter named Catherine who was born about 1849 in AL. Other children of Joseph & Evaline included Wm, Susan, Wilson and Pickney. I believe the family moved to Alvarado, TX with several other family members. J. Josiah Ligon m. T. Carolina Griffin, dau of Richard Griffin (W.M.'s brother) Dr. John C. Ligon m. Frances C. Griffin, on March 14, 1848 in Marshall Co. Frances is also a dau of Richard Griffin. They might have died in AR -- not really sure.
