    1. [ALMARSHA] McClendon- Tucker- Fortner
    2. My grandmother, Flora Lee McClendon, was born in Pell City, or Springville, St. Clair County, in 1908. Her parents were William Boyd and Mattie McClendon- first cousins. Wm. Boyd was born in 1882 and Mattie was born in 1892. Boyd's parents were Jasper Joseph McClendon and Laura Jane TUCKER, who married in 1858. On Jasper and Laura's marriage license, Jasper signed his last name "McCLELLAN" for some reason. (I do know they are Boyd's parents because Mattie, their daughter-in-law told me so.) Laura Jane Tucker was born in Marshall County. Mattie's parents were Joel Dennis McClendon and Paulina Elizabeth FORTNER, Dennis being born in 1847 in "Alabama" and Elizabeth being born in 1857 in Alabama. Jasper Joseph and Joel Dennis shared the same parents- Dennis senior and Senia McClendon/McLendon. My McClendons apparently moved from GA to the St. Clair and Marshall county areas in the early to mid 1800s. If anyone has information they can share on McClendons in these counties, please contact me, and i will share what info i have as well. Donna in MT

    1. [ALMARSHA] Smith & Jones
    2. I am trying to find any information at all on my ggrandmother. The story our family thinks is true is that her parents names were Jim or Tom and Martha Jones. Martha was an indian and maybe Tom or Jim was too. My ggrandmothers name when she was born was something like Reddy or Rudy or maybe Riddie Jones. That would've been around 1897. At some point when my ggrandmother was a very small girl, maybe 3 or 4, her father killed her mother. We don't know exactly what happened but after that my ggrandmother ended up living in a mining camp. For some reason she was supposed to stay in a house on the camp and whoever lived in that house took care of her. Until John and Pearl Smith moved in. They took her with them when they left the camp. Pearl was a holyroller and preached quite a bit, I believe. John played the fiddle and was called fiddlin John. He might have been running from the law when they left the mining camp. And I should say, I know that John and Pearl lived in Marshall co. at one time, but I'm not sure that's where they were when they took my ggrandmother. In 1900 they were living in Grundy co. Tn. with no kids. In 1902 they were in Orme, TN, where Pearl had her first child, Cleve, and they already had my ggrandmother with them then. So they could've been anywhere in that vicinity. If any of this sounds familiar to anyone, we are desperate for any clue at all. Has anyone ever heard of orphans being left at mining camps before? Thanks, Debra Westervelt, Valdosta, GA

    1. [ALMARSHA] Hughes, Culver, Garrett
    2. In answer to your roll call, I am researching William H. Hughes who married Jane (unknown). He lived in Marshall County in 1850, the son of George Hughes and Rhoda Garrett. Rhoda Garrett Hughes is listed as being 80 yrs of age and a member of his household. Children were: Rhoda Hughes who married Jesse Culver, Nancy , Margaret, Catherine, Rebecca and son George C.Hughes. George C. Hughes married Anna Elizabeth Francis in 1862 in Morgan County, AL. Jesse and Rhoda Hughes Culver lost a son in the Civil War. His name was James Martin Culver. He was their oldest son. Information I am seeking is as follows: What is the last name of Jane, wife of William? When did William die and where is he buried? What was the name of his oldest son who is already married by 1850? Thanks, Jan

    2. Linda Kay Davis
    3. Hi Darla Just saw your query and thought I would say hi and how in the world are you ?? Have not discovered anything else on my elusive Rachael . Sure wish some of the old timers in Marshall/Jackson county would break out some of the gossip they heard as children somebody (if not everybody should have been talking))))(beg). Well just wanted to say hi again, btw do you remember who and do you have an email address for the cousin that was working on Anderson Gillian ? I took a picture of his marker when I was in Marshall county 5 or 6 years ago. I told her I had it but just came across it a few days ago. Any one else out there working on our wild bunch?? Descendants of Bright Generation No. 1 1.? Bright1 He married Rachel , possible daughter of Henry Turner. She was born 1785 in Ga. Notes for Bright: Rowlin from 1840 Census may have been the husband of Sarah.(see 1850 census) Who is James H. Bright(Blount) from land grant records??? Any connection to our Brights Notes for Rachel: Much of the order of this family is conjuncture, They are living together during the 1850 Census. Rachel (Sr.) is dead by this time and I believe she is the mother of the Bright's we find in Marshall county in 1850,but have yet to prove the link with the Indian heritage and the seemingly disregard for the institute of marriage it certainly gives me a headache! Children of Bright and Rachel are: 2 i. Sarah2 Turner, born 1811.(more likely to be daughter in law) 3 ii. Mary (Polly) Bright, born 1812. marked William Brock 4 iii. Nathan Bright, born 1820 in Ga. + 5 iv. Rachel Bright, born 1832 in Ga. (Rachael and Marion seen to have a different father than the other Bright Children, they both in later census's listed father's birthplace as England) Others claim NC. 6 v. Marion Frances Bright, born 1833 in Guntersville, Al. Notes for Marion Frances Bright: moved to TN and then to Mo finally went to Indian Terr 1890's died there children raised by a Choctaw family 7 vi. Reuben Chapman Bright, born 1835.It appears on the order list of the 1850 census that Chapman is Sarah's child, however in the 1880 They are living in the same hh and he lists her as his sister!!?? Generation No. 2 5. Rachel2 Bright (Bright1) was born 1832 in Ga. Notes for Rachel Bright: Rachel never married and Bright is her maiden name. This family is a real puzzle. She had property and was able to have hired help. Unless the hired help is the father of her children?? She also said her father was born in England and this is certainly the Bright family from Ga and NC. . She was living with her mother Rachel in 1840 and Sarah and her father? Henry Turner in the 1850 Census. This is presumed information for the great part, This family was Cherokee and may have been married in the Indian manner. Which allows for marriage and divorce at the discretion of both parties. What is know is that several sources(descendants of various members of family) say that Sarah(the elder) and the older Brights were Cherokee, one source said Sarah spoke no English but have nothing to prove that claim. What is know is that Some of the Brights went to Indian Territory during the removal, and other remained and hide on Look Out Mountain until the soldiers left. Marion Frances Rachel's brother went to Indian Territory in the l880's to visit or stay with his cousin's the Wilson's he had with him his younger children his wife recently dying. He had a couple grown children who stayed in Al. While he was there he died the children were raised by an Indian family. Because of the few records left.. mostly land records, there is quite a bit of unknown information on this family. Children of Rachel Bright are: 8 i. Sarah Ann3 Bright, born 1850 in Guntersville, Al. 9 ii. William W Bright, born 1856 in Guntersville, Al. + 10 iii. John L Bright, born February 14, 1861 in Guntersville, Al; died October 26, 1926 in Stanford, TX. 11 iv. Elizabeth Bright, born 1867 in Guntersville, Al.married a Whitlock. 12 v. Lucinda Bright, born 1869 in Guntersville, Al. She married Murry. Generation No. 3 10. John L3 Bright (Rachel2, Bright1) was born February 14, 1861 in Guntersville, Al, and died October 26, 1926 in Stanford, TX. He married Mary Kate LaFarlett August 07, 1887 in Guntersville, Al, daughter of Henry Williams and Sarah La Farlett. She was born September 20, 1865 in Guntersville, Al, and died November 09, 1937 in Stanford, TX. More About John L Bright: Fact 1: Stanford, TX Notes for Mary Kate LaFarlett: There is a story that Sarah (Mollie's mother) was raped during the last year of the Civil War, and this could be true Guntersville was a hotbed during this period with frequent raids on the town and Civilians. It was burned more than once and there is documentation of many of the citizens being injured. At any rate she gave birth to my great-grandmother without the blessings of any church or civil authority.I was told by an older relative this story. There were several instances of fatherless families in this family am not too sure what to believe, however giving her the benefit of the doubt the others had several children before marriage(if they bothered at all) and she only had Mary before she married Henry Williams with whom she had a large family. Children of John Bright and Mary LaFarlett are: 13 i. Lillie Golden4 Bright, born July 24, 1888 in Guntersville, Marshall, Al; died January 12, 1958 in Roswell, NM. She married (1) Oscar Pounders 1905. She married (2) Elijah Lee Bellah December 13, 1913 in Waco, McLennon, TX; born August 01, 1872 in Randolph, Al; died October 19, 1932 in Gotobo, Ok. Notes for Lillie Golden Bright: She was married 1st to Frank Alred he died from an attack of appendicitis, then she married Oscar Pounders who was Hazel and Mae's father. He died from kidney disease. Notes for Oscar Pounders: he died from appendicitis when Hazel and May were very small. Notes for Elijah Lee Bellah: Wrote a column for the Biweekly Farm Report published in Dallas TX he met Lillie through the column. After the death of his first wife Ida Evans he stopped writing for a while. When he went back to the column he ask for letters from readers that remembered his column. Lillie a widow with two small children answered the request they began a correspondence that lasted for a year. They had never met in person when Lee proposed, however they had exchanged pictures. She was living in Hillsboro with her parents he had her met him at the train station and they went to Waco and got married. Romantic, Huh? More About Elijah Lee Bellah: Fact 1: Gotobo, Ok 14 ii. Maybell Minnie, born May 20, 1890 in Guntersville, Al. 15 iii. Marvin Bright, born March 22, 1893 in Guntersville, Al. 16 iv. Agnes Esther Bright, born June 13, 1895 in TX. 17 v. William Emit Bright, born February 12, 1898 in TX. 18 vi. 1. [ALMARSHA] ROLL CALL - Bellew/Ballew Family & Murder
    2. William H. "Bill" BALLEW was married to Annie C. B. POWELL on 1 July 1879 in Guntersville, AL. Bill was shot and killed shortly before son James Custer Ballew/Bellew was born. This occurred in 1880 around Guntersville, Alabama. A white man was hung for the killing, but later a Negro man, on his deathbed, said that wrong man had been hung - that he had killed "Bill" Ballew. Does anyone have information on this Bill Ballew family? I would love to have more info on the "killing" - do Marshall County records/newspapers go back this far? Anyone know of burial site of these Marshall County Ballews? Thanks! Rilla Mewbourn Remlap, AL

    3. I am researching Mikral Durpee Hinds (known as Mike or Michael) and his wife, Rebecca Noble. Mike was born 30 Sep 1823 in Madison, AL. I need proof that his parents were Calvin Hinds and Sophia C. Culp. Calvin and Sophia moved their family to Red Hill, Marshall, AL before 1850. Mike married Rebecca Noble 13 Nov 1851 in Red Hill. Both Calvin and Mike and their families moved to TX before 1853. Mike and his family returned to Marshall, AL shortly thereafter, residing in the Warrenton area. Rebecca died about 1869 in the Warrenton area. I need proof of her death. Mike died 20 Nov 1904 according to his tombstone. He is buried in TX but he may have died in AL. I have been unable to find him on any 1900 census. Any evidence of his death other than his tombstone would be helpful. Thank you for your help. This is a great list! Barbara Finney
