    2. JOHN FREEMAN KILLS JOHN CROW AT M'VILLE SUNDAY AFTERNOON John Freeman was placed in the county jail Sunday night charged with the murder of John Crow near McVille, six miles east of Albertville, Sunday afternoon about 2 o'clock. Deputies Pat King and [?] Rollins were called to Albertville Sunday night to get Freeman, who had surrendered to Deputy [?] Biddle. Alex Maness, a neighbor of Freeman and Crow, was placed in jail Monday in connection with the killing. Details of the tragedy are difficult to secure, but it is said that at an investigation held by officers shortly after the killing it was learned that Freeman and Maness went to Crow's home Sunday afternoon and during their visit a misunderstanding arose and the shooting followed. Crow's family had gone visiting and there were no eye witnesses to the shooting. Maness, it is said, stated [?] he ran when he saw a difficulty [?]ing and after he had gotten a short? distance from the house heard a shot. Freeman is said to have told Deputy Biddle that he fired two shots at Crow, who was threatening him with a shotgun. One bullet entered Crow's head just above the [?] eye. Since his arrest Freeman has said to officers that he had nothing to say about the killing, which is [?] to have taken place about 2 o'clock in the afternoon. It is the general opinion of those acquainted with the parties that the three men had been gambling and had had a falling out. It is said that nothing was known of the tragedy until some of the members of Crow's family returned home about 4 o'clock in the afternoon. One of his little sons started into his father's room, the door being open, and as he entered he let out a scream. Other members of the family rushed in and found Crow lying on his back on the floor [?] a bed dead with a double-barreled shotgun across his breast. The gun contained two loaded shells but had not been fired lately, it is said. Crow was 44 years old and had been twice married. He is survived by his wife and seven children. Freeman is 34 years old and has a wife. Maness is 30 years old.

Surnames: Grammar, Culbert Classification: Biography Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/SS.2ADE/13.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Yes, Newell and Martha Armstrong Grammar are both buried at Mt. Moriah Cemetery in Marshall County, Alabama. As you probably know, Newell's dates are (12/1843 - 12/1918) and Martha's (03/26/1845 - 01/04/1933). They were married on August 20, 1865. I know they were born, married, were in the Marshall County Census in 1880, 1900 and 1920 and that they died there. When were they in Texas? As I wrote before, Martha and Newell could not have children of their own but they adopted a little girl, Mary Belle McClendon, when she was about the age of 3 (in 1878). Stories have it that Mary Belle's mother had died and Newell and Martha came upon what remained of her family on their way to Chattanooga, Tennessee. When Newell and Martha made a complimentary remark about the 3 year old red-head, Belle's father asked them to take her. Nothing is known about Mary Belle's birth family. However, she married Asa Culbert on March 2, 1892 in Marshall County. They had five children: Combie, John Motley, Mary Florence, Carmen and Andrew Jackson Culbert (my grandfather). Asa died in a freak logging accident on Halloween of 1903, when my grandfather was just a couple months old. Belle married a widower named John M. Henry on June 9, 1906 in Marshall County. They had four children: Mary, Bernice, JL Burnett and May Henry. John Henry died in 1924 and Belle retook the name "Culbert". She died on November 5, 1955 and is buried at Woosley Cemetery in Marshall County next to her first husband, Asa, with a simple tombstone which reads, "Belle Culbert - wife of Acie". For further information regarding this line, please contact me directly at LADYAB@JPS.NET Jennifer P.S. I'm sorry to say that I have no other information regarding Newell's siblings, just their names and approximate years of birth. I do, however, have information regarding Newell's uncles, John, Peterson and Leonard.

His parents died of typhoid fever when he was eight years old and he was raised in Sand Mountain, Alabama by an Uncle Dave (White?) who owned a big plantation, forest, and sawmill. They would sell the lumber to a company in Rome, Georgia. 'Uncle Dave' had one daughter and four sons, three of which were killed in France. Jourdan moved to Atlanta around 1900, married 1) Maud Mooney from Flowery Branch, GA, 2) Emma White, had a grocery store in the Grant Park area of Atlanta. Please let me know if any of this sounds familiar, thanks.

Surnames: Grammar, Armstrong Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/SS.2ADE/13.1 Message Board Post: Dear Elaine, I know this family well. Newell C. Grammar and his wife, Martha Armstrong Grammar, being unable to have children of their own, adopted my Great Grandmother, Mary Belle McClendon Grammar. Martha Armstrong Grammar, Newell's wife, was also the sister of an Elizabeth Ann Armstrong, who was my GGG Grandmother. So besides being my adopted GG Grandmother, Martha is also my GGGG Aunt. My family has long been searching for information regarding Belle's birth family with no success, but we have a great deal of information on the Grammar and Armstrong families. William L. Grammar's father was John Grammar Sr., born circa 1770 in Virginia and died Aug 10, 1840, in Morgan County, Alabama. He married Elizabeth Abernathy on March 29, 1792 in Dinwiddie County, Virginia. Elizabeth Abernathy Grammar was born about 1774 in Virginia and died May 1, 1852 in Lawrence County, Missouri. Besides William, they also had children: Martha C., John Jr., Pleasant, Peterson, Mary Burrow, Eliza, Martha Coleman, Leonard, James Madison, Monroe Washington and Coleman. I have information on the descendants of John Jr., Peterson and Leonard. Sarah's full name was Sarah Ann Rankin. I'm afraid I don't know anything else about her at this time. Jennifer

    3. Hi All, I received the following information from another genealogist; I thought some folks might be interested, especially in light of the previous question regarding the name, Mehitable, on one of the Maine lists. Dear Rootsfolks, The History Channel will be telecasting the following show: Benjamin Bratt narrates a 2-hour special that combines the history and mystery of names with a genealogical search. Traveling from ancient China to medieval Europe, from Africa to the Wild West, we search through slavery, the Indian Wars, and the great wave of U.S. immigration. As actor William Baldwin and "Braveheart" screenwriter Randall Wallace trace their family trees, we learn the genealogist's tools and look to the future. Can we move beyond written records to prehistoric times? 17 Sept. 9:00-11:00 PM 18 Sept. 1:00-3:00 AM 22 Sept. 1:00-3:00 PM
