How often have you seen in print an old name that has fallen by the wayside? I just finished reading "Thirteen Moons" by Charles Frazier, he also wrote "Cold Mountain". The story is about an old man telling how he grew up and his relationship with the Cherokee in the Carolinas. Without going into all the details, he learned to speak the language; enabling him to trade with them. It's a good story. Reading along I came across two names that caused me to stop and ponder, how could these names have left such an impression that they were not only used; but passed along to other generations? The names were "Lawan and Utana. My mother, Lottie Belle (Clement) Cox; named my sister LaJuana and me Manona. We considered these names a burden upon us. Our mother always told us if we had a girl we must name her Utanah.....she pronounced it "You-tanah. (Fat chance with the names we had to admit to on the first day of school!) When I asked about the origin of these names, Mom told us they were just some old names. How amazing. I shall carry my name with honor. ************************************** AOL now offers free email to everyone. Find out more about what's free from AOL at http://www.aol.com.
