Barbara, I only know a little about the Coons family. Rebecca's uncle, James, was my gggrandfaather--he supposedly was a school teacher. My ggrandmother, Mattie Lou, was his daughter and her brother was Jim.....supposedly a Methodist minister at some point in his life. James married a Mary White.....we think she was from TN, but don't really know. Rebecca's name was Rebecca Jane Coons Reed...she married Samuel Reed after the War Between the States. They had at least 2 childre, one was named Elector Elizabeth, who married a John Wilson Kelley and had 13 children. HE was from Walker County, AL. Rebecca and Samuel are shown on the Pickens County AL 1870 census. Does this help? Do you have additional information on the Coons? We think some of this family moved to TX after 1864.....and lived around FT Worth,Dallas area. I am trying to find the Coons family information.......this is about all we know. Timmie
There is a Nancy J. Coons, age 13, born Alabama, mother born Tennessee, listed on the 1880 census for Tarrant County, Texas (Fort Worth) as a servant to Oliver S. Kennedy, wife Georgia and children. He was born in Alabama, she was born in Tennessee. He's listed as a U.S. Commissioner. There are 9 other Coons listed on the 1880 census in Texas as born in Alabama, but none others in Fort Worth.
