This name was then adopted by people who sided with secessionists to apply to individuals who wished to stay loyal to the Union during the Civil War. It was a name that Southern Unionists were called, but they would not have referred to themselves by that name. There were good people in NW Alabama who were loyal to each side; there were also some bad people who used the war as an excuse to practice their lawlessness.
