He served in the Union's First Alabama Cavalry during the Civil War and was taken as a POW while fighting in NE Mississippi on Oct. 26, 1863.. His army record notes that he died on Oct. 2, 1864 in Charleston, SC. What it doesn't say on his record is that he was undoubtedly kept as a prisoner first on Belle Isle in Richmond and then at Andersonville in Georgia before taken to South Carolina about five weeks before he died.
