He served in the Union's First Alabama Cavalry during the Civil War and was taken as a POW while fighting in NE Mississippi on Oct. 26, 1863.. His army record notes that he died on Oct. 2, 1864 in Charleston, SC. What it doesn't say on his record is that he was undoubtedly kept as a prisoner first on Belle Isle in Richmond and then at Andersonville in Georgia before taken to South Carolina about five weeks before he died. > > > ============================== > Search the US Census Collection. A good number of the Family Groups reported by this board will be represented tomorrow at the regular 3rd Sunday in July All-Day Singing service at Whitehouse Church. Clayton Howell, b 1912 (son of Lang A.C. & Sarah F. Kennedy Howell and not a grey hair on his head when I last visited him), or his wife, Ivie Loden Howell, will undoubtedly be there. If Clayton is still spry, he can show you where the foundation of the old Forks of the Buttahatcha Primitive Baptist Church (est. abt 1820 by Capt Joseph Burleson & others) was located; if he can't ask Sidney McLean to show you where it was. One of the most beautiful sites in Alabama is the overlook of the Forks of the Buttahatchee confluence, across the Self/Burleson/Howell/Haley pastureland, from the vantage of the Whitehouse cemetery. Wish I could be there; a number of my kin & related families will come in from various cities in AL & other States. My cousin, Sidney McLean (a Whitehead, Carr & Doss descendant) will be giving out free CDs of prior Singing services & recording the service again this year. Songs will be lead by Gary Weatherly, Bernard Burleson, J.D. Logan and many others. Ya'll come. Joel S. Mize Unionists of the Warrior Mountains of Alabama
