I figured we would be related pretty close. This last year the 7 Hodgson brothers and sisters put a stone on matties[Martha's] and Wheelers grave. .She died in 1920 about the same time her 1st son Wheeler. Her husband didn't bother to mark their graves. They also cleaned the head stones of her 3 other boys. They are all buried in front of her brother Ransom Burleson and his wife Goldie at White house Cemetary ----- Original Message ----- From: "Hector Autry" <hectorautry1@gmail.com> To: <almarion@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, February 19, 2007 3:14 PM Subject: Re: [ALMARION] BURLESON - Cemetary Omission Discovered Thelma, If I understand your information correctly, here's how I'm related to your husband: Hillkiah - COMMON ANCESTOR David Jasper - SIBLINGS - Ezekiel Burleson Rhoda Emmiline Burleson - 1ST COUSINS - George Washington Burleson Martha Green - 2ND COUSINS - George Walker Burleson Bertie Mae Jackson - 3RD COUSINS - Florena "Flora" Burleson Your Husband Hodgson- 4TH COUSINS - Milton Walker Autry (my father) ................................................Hector Ed Autry As you can see, your husband and my father are exact 'straight across' 4th Cousins... and I am one generation 'removed' from that 4th Cousin relationship. *Therefore, I am your husband's...* ** *4th Cousin, Once Removed.* Hector On 2/19/07, Thelma D. I started this search for my roots in 1988 and have learned so much along the way. Your query impressed me because although the family ties are not between you and I the fact that your father wants to update a headstone touches me. I found listed a William Burleson in Birmingham 256-241-0560 on Acton Road hope this is the correct person. Best of luck to you and yours. Linda
A wonderful story. I have really enjoyed you sharing your stories with us. I've just returned from Alabama where I attended my mother's funeral. During my one week stay, my father, Milton Walker Autry, took me and my older brother to Marion County where we met a few of his old friends and visited a couple of cemeteries. At one cemetery I saw headstones with names with which I had long been familiar, i.e., "Walker Burleson", and his wife "Mattie L." (Matilda Louise Woodham). As I began to step away from viewing the headstone, my mind alerted me to something odd. I did the mental double-take and then exclaimed, "Hey, dad. Look at this! They forgot to put the death date on the headstone for Mattie Woodham." (Ever the genealogist, I still refer to all females in my ancestry by their maiden names.) My father, a grandson of Walker and Mattie, took a keen interest in this omission and earnestly said, "I'll contact some of my cousins up here and raise the money to have that date put on there. It was during this visit to Marion County that I had the pleasure of spending the evening with Allan Brasseal, a truly conversational character. It didn't take long for him to realize my interest in Marion County Burleson genealogy... including Woodham, Pope, Kelly, Robertson, Roberson, and others. He said, "I think I might have something you might like to copy. Moments later he emerged from an adjoining room with several Burleson family group sheets stapled together, which included that of Ezekiel Burleson (born 1817) and George Washington "Wash" Burleson (born. 1852), Hilkiah Burleson (born 1790), and a John M. Burleson (born ca. 1844). Later, upon closer inspection of the family group sheets, I noted that the actual compiler of the information was a William George Burleson of 664 Pamela Street, Birmingham, Alabama. But, to my dismay, the dates "1983/1984" followed and I knew it would be quite unlikely that I would be able to contact him as that he probably would not still live at the same address after all this time. I you know how I can contact William George Burleson, or are doing genealogical research on any of the surnames mentioned, I'd appreciate your contacting me. Many thanks, Hector Ed Autry By way of introduction, here's my lineage: Edward Burleson John Aaron Burleson Jonathan Burleson David Franklin Burleson Hilkiah R. Burleson Ezekiel Burleson George Washington Burleson George Walker Burleson Florena "Flora" Burleson (married Grady Autry) Milton Walker Autry Hector Ed Autry
Old Love Joy Church She sits there among the weeds and grass with all her history, watching people rushing by, ignored by about all, not needed anymore, with most of her history buried in the cemetery near by. Once there was much action at the church. My father, James Howard Palmer, talked about his school days there as a boy. It was at this church he saw his first flying machine,(airplane) all the people around there were so excited they talked about it for days. His first ride in an automobile was to that school when his uncle (W.W.Ozbirn) picked him up in his new Ford. He was so very proud for the other school children to see him riding in style. About the month of August in the 1800s camp meetings were held there in and around the church. It was more than a religious gathering, it was a social event for which folks traveled great distances. There people traded horses and got acquainted with their neighbors, Young folks got to meet and many marriages began at the camp meetings. Sarah Ann Purcer, about 16 years of age and a daughter of David Cullin Purser, lived about mile north east of the church. It was at one of these she got acquainted with and married John Benton Sullins, from the Pearce’s Mill country. She later became my great grandmother. The old church stands there today on Love Joy Road just off HWY 43n in Hamilton, AL. If you're in the neighborhood, stop by and listen. You might just hear those voices from long ago.Joel Palmer.
Thanks for the priceless story from the early days of radio. My mother--now 88--lived in Bear Creek and said that her family (O.W. and Nina Phillips) had the first radio in town. In the evenings they would set it on the front porch and half of the town would sit in their front yard and listen to it. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Classification: lookup Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.alabama.counties.marion/2294/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have FINALLY finished a 2-year project and completed transcribing the ENTIRE first roll of microfilm of the Lamar County newspapers from the Alabama Department of Archives and History. These include The Vernon Pioneer (1875-1878), The Vernon Clipper (1879-1880) and The Lamar News (1886 - 1887). The finished papers can be viewed freely on www.newspaperabstracts.com under Lamar County. They may also be viewed at http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/al/lamar/newspapers.htm and soon on the Lamar County Kin website at http://www.fayette.net/carruth/indexpage.htm. In the beginning I typed everything in the paper, but as I went along, it began to be more what I thought was interesting. I did however put the headline and a brief statement of what the article was about. I tried to be as accurate as possible, however, that's A LOT of typing, so I know mistakes were made. If anyone is interested in a photocopy of the actual article please let me know. On the Archives website, as I submitted a paper, I also submitted any marriages and deaths that appeared in the paper, so look there as well for information. These papers included not only local news, but state, national, and world news, also recipes, farming notes, household tips, fashion notes, music, etc. Very informational about the time period. Hope it helps someone break down their brick walls!! Veneta

A listing of the Marion County newspapers can be found on the Alabama Department of Archives and History website found at http://www.archives.state.al.us/ look under genealogists, then Database of newspapers, then type in Marion county. It will give a list of newspapers available for Marion county that have been microfilmed. These can either be bought or obtained through the interlibrary loan. Also, if you live around Hamilton, the Probate Judges office has old copies of the newspapers from around that time. I don't know if Glen Allen had a paper then or not, but these are a few suggestions. Wish you success in your research. I am interested in information on the Hardshell Baptist Church that was located near Hackleburg. I have a picture taken a few years ago. It was abandoned and growing derelict. Can anyone tell me it's history and if there are any membership records? My GGgrandfather John Robert Waters attended there in the 1930's.I have an oral history told to me by his Granddaughter Mazie Lee Waters Brooks before her death. Also he ran a Blacksmith Shop there. Are there any records pertaining to that in existance? Email me at cowcrazy78@hotmail.com Donna Waters Evans
I'm sorry Charles, this doesn't ring any bells yet! Karla I do not know him, he contacted me once because of Clark connection. Does the date July 5 1956 mean anything to you? Or a picture of a "junior" Parker in military uniform. If it does let me know. No, I don't know Sterling Parker. I only know of John Parker because he married Sarah Hallmark who was my gg-grandmother's sister. I've never researched the Parker family.
