Author: DonUmphrey46 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.alabama.counties.marion/2318.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: There were many atrocities and many people died at the hands of partisans for both sides during the Civil War in NW Alabama. I have done considerable research and have not seen the names you mentioned as being victims. You said that you had read about this--do you recall where? Do you know for a fact that these people were strong supporters of the Confederacy? Do their grave stones contain death dates? If yes, did they all die on the same day? Most civilian casualties in neighbor-to-neighbor fighting were the male members of the household, and it would most likely be someone who was known to be strongly pro-Confederate who preyed on pro-Union families (such as Ham Carpenter). The lowest of the lowest pro-Union vigilante was John Stout and his followers, and I have never seen a mention of them killing women and children. (Although they would steal all the belongings of families who were pro-Confederate. This group was active in 1864 until the end of the war, and this was the period of greatest lawlessness in NW Alabama.) Possibilities? It is possible that this account is local folklore and/or that it is partially true. Another possibility is that an atrocity occurred that is lost to written history. I'm pretty sure that you'll not find any mention of this in any published books; if it is mentioned anywhere, it would be in testimony of the Southern Claims Commission. These claims continue to be a rich source of information of what occurred during the Civil War, but using them is not easy because you must look in the National Archives under the names of individual claims. Best wishes, Don Umphrey Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hello, I have a Silas L Webb who married a Sarah Berryhill, they had a daughter named Hanna Alice, she married a Philip Beasley (my kin). Hanna was born in 1846. Would this Silas L Webb be your Silas?? I do not have a birth date for him or his wife Sarah. But you can see Hanna's birth year at 1846. Philip and Hanna lived in Marion Co, and moved to Ms. When Hanna died and Philip remarried he married a lady with the last name of Fowler. I know I am throwing names out there, but mabye they can help you a little. I have a place in Tenn as Silas L Webb living, McMinn Tn. Does anyone on this list have a copy of the Marion County Heritage Book? I am seeking information on the Tidwell's and Tuckers. Also, I am looking for a marriage record for Sarah Frances TIDWELL McNUTT, who married J. William (or William J.) AKINS sometimes between 1895 and 1900 probably in Marion County. They were married before the 1900 census was taken, and they were living in Palos, Jefferson, Alabama at that time. She was previously married to John A. McNutt on 31 Jul 1877 at the house of Newton Willis in Fayette Co., AL. John died in 1895 and is buried in the Earnest Chapel Church Cemetery, near Oakman, Walker Co., AL. Sarah Frances TIDWELL was born in Marion County in May of 1865. John died in 1895 and is buried in the Earnest Chapel Church Cemetery, near Oakman and Parish, Walker Co., AL. Frances is buried next to him, but her stone does not have a birth date or death date. I have looked in Walker County and Jefferson County for a marriage, but I did not find one. Many thanks, Davine ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
I have Chania Cochran Nichols, she was also called Chaney's father's name, it was John Cochran. Isaac's first wife was Mary Alice, don't have a last name. William Lee (Sarah), Isaac (Mary Alice? then Chania) and my great, great grandfather Joshua L. Nichols (Elizabeth) were brothers and the 3 of them married sisters. ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
Barbara, Yes, The 1850 Marion County, AL census of Joshua Nichols (who married Matilda Bean) shows his age as 29 years, born about 1821 in Tennessee. Aparently he was the son of Isaac Nichols and his first wife Mary Alice. After the death of Mary Alice, Isaac married Chania/Chaney Cochran in 1826, Bedford County. Since Bedford and Rutherford Counties adjoin one another they may have married in one county and lived in an adjoining county. The 1850 Marion County census shows 13 or so Nichols families living there by 1850. In looking at the Bedford and Rutherford County census records, I've thought that some may have lived in both counties. There was another family of Nichols who lived in Bedford County, TN, town of Bell Buckle. Their names were William Lee Nichols and his wife Sarah Cochran Nichols. William Lee Nichols died and after his death his widow Sarah and her children moved to Bell County, TX in the 1850s. I now live in Bell County and some of these Nichols descendants have been to visit me. In fact one of them gave me the copy of Mary Elizabeth (Nichols) Wiginton's death certificate which list her mother as Elizabeth Cochran. (see my previous message today). Mary Elizabeth Wiginton and her husband James Wiginton moved to Bell County, TX after the Civil War. They lived here for awhile and moved back to Marion County, AL, leaving some of their children here.
